Kamila Andini, Riri Riza Films Adorn Slate
Forka Film, the renamed company of leading Indonesian indie producer Ifa Isfansyah, is unwrapping a slate with films by newcomer Eden Junjung and veterans Kamila Andini and Riri Riza.
Previously known as Fourcolours Films, the company has recently completed principal photography on Junjung’s “Mad of Madness” (aka “Angkara Murka”), a psychological thriller that explores the struggles of a young mother working in a sand mine after her husband’s mysterious disappearance. Raihaanun (“Following Diana,” “27 Steps of May”) stars in the lead role as Ambar, bringing raw emotion to a narrative of survival and sacrifice.
Known for his critically acclaimed short films (“Happy Family,” “Bura,” “Flower in the Wall,” “The Intrusion”), Junjung recently pitched the film project at the NAFF It Project Market, part of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. It is set for completion in early 2025.
Andini, who was in Busan last year as director of the Netflix-backed mini-series “The Cigarette Girl,” is preparing “Four Seasons in Java,” a moving exploration of a sexual assault survivor’s journey to redefine home and family. It is co-produced with Anthony Chen’s (“The Breaking Ice,” “Ilo Ilo”) Singapore-based Giraffe Pictures.
Also on the horizon is “Cubs,” a hard-hitting teenage drama directed by Riri Riza (“Emma,” “Humba Dreams”) which is set in a corrupt gold-mining town and delves into the complex moral struggles of a young boy. “Cubs” marks the first collaboration between Isfansyah and Riza, two of Indonesia’s most respected creative forces. Mira Lesmana of Miles Films is also attached to the project as executive producer.
The company is also nurturing “Death of Spin,” directed by BW Purbanegara, whose previous feature Ziarah was a standout at the Busan Film Festival last year. The film is a sharp psychological thriller adapted from Pawan Kumar’s “U-Turn,” a film that has been remade in seven languages.
It is preparing “The Period of Her,” an anthology film project directed by four of Indonesia’s most promising young female directors: Erlina Rakhmawati, Praditha Blifa, Sarah Fadilah, and Yulinda Dwi Andriyani. The picture, which reflects on gender and cultural norms in Indonesia, explores the lives of four women as they navigate the societal pressures of womanhood.
“I’ve never been more excited as a producer. With ‘Mad of Madness’ and the projects on our new slate, we’re exploring fresh creative territories and challenging ourselves like never before,” Isfansyah, producer and Forka Films founder, told Variety.
