‘I Am Martin Parr,’ Portrait of Maverick Photographer, Debuts Trailer
London-based international documentary sales and production outfit Dogwoof has unveiled the trailer for “I Am Martin Parr,” ahead of its world premiere Thursday at the Rome Film Festival.
The documentary, from director Lee Shulman, is a portrait of photographer Martin Parr, who revolutionized contemporary photography by “inventing a political‚ humanist and accessible photographic language,” Dogwoof said.
The film, which features contributors such as artist Grayson Perry and musician Mark Bedford, charts the maverick behind some of the most iconic images of the past century on a road trip across England with Parr.
Commenting on his approach, Parr says: “A good photo is one that tells a story with an energy that attracts the viewer. Being a photographer means knowing how to choose an image. It’s not something that can be theorized. If I had found the perfect formula, perhaps I wouldn’t still be here taking photographs.”
In a statement, Shulman said: “We are taken on a road trip with this tireless adventurer‚ his camera trigger-finger always at the ready to capture the smallest details of everyday life. He is one of the most controversial contemporary photographers of his time‚ his images often amusing and entertaining those who witness them. And yet he makes us feel ever so slightly uncomfortable‚ caught between a silent laugh and the frightful realization of recognizing ourselves in his uncompromising portrait of consumerist society. We will have the chance to follow him in detail as he works‚ getting beneath his singular vision of the world whilst retracing his hectic life as an often-misunderstood photographer.”
The documentary is produced by Haut et Court’s Emma Lepers (“Christophe…Definitively,” “How I Came to Hate Maths”) and executive produced by Dogwoof’s Oli Harbottle and Anna Godas. The director of photography is Maxime Kathari.
Dogwoof is handling international sales.
The film is a coproduction with Avrotros with the support of France Televisions. The commissioning editor is Jessica Raspe. It is produced in association with Dogwoof and in partnership with the Centre National Du Cinéma et de L’image Animée.
