Renowned RPG developer Obsidian Entertainment has finally revealed a gameplay trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 at The Game Awards 2024. A release window for The Outer Worlds 2 has also been confirmed, and despite the space-faring RPG being an Xbox first-party game, PlayStation users can look forward to it as well.
The Outer Worlds may have launched five years ago, but it’s still one of the most humorous and intelligently written RPGs ever made. Given that The Outer Worlds was also Obsidian’s first attempt at a space RPG, players couldn’t wait to see the studio explore the genre further in a sequel. Obsidian officially revealed The Outer Worlds 2 back in June 2021 by way of a CGI trailer that was rife with the meta-humor fans expect of the series. Three and a half years later, The Outer Worlds 2‘s second showing just took place at The Game Awards 2024.

The Outer Worlds 2: The Argument For and Against More Planets Than the First Game
The Outer Worlds is a fun space adventure that keeps its world relatively small, and for its sequel, there are pros and cons to expanding.
Following an exciting update on The Outer Worlds 2‘s development earlier this year, Obsidian has debuted a gameplay trailer for the highly-anticipated sci-fi RPG at The Game Awards 2024. In true The Outer Worlds fashion, the sequel’s gameplay trailer is packed with tongue-in-cheek quips that reference previous Obsidian games (such as Fallout: New Vegas) and even poke fun at The Outer Worlds 2‘s lengthy development time. The trailer acknowledged that The Outer Worlds 2 took nearly thrice as long to make as its predecessor, but will be twice as big and feature several new weapons, more action, and lots of graphical improvements.
Obsidian Debuts The Outer Worlds 2 Gameplay Trailer, Confirms Release Window and Launch Platforms
- Coming in 2025
- Releasing on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC
- Available on Xbox Game Pass day one
Judging by the gameplay trailer, The Outer Worlds 2 looks to be a definite step-up over the original in almost every way. It appears fans won’t have to strap in for yet another long wait either, as Obsidian also confirmed a 2025 release window for The Outer Worlds 2. Interestingly, The Outer Worlds 2 is headed to PS5 in addition to Xbox Series X/S and PC, a rather unexpected move considering Obsidian is a full-fledged Xbox first-party studio. It’s worth mentioning, though, that The Outer Worlds did release on PS4 back in 2019 and the sequel’s 2021 announcement trailer made no mention of launch platforms.
On the other hand, The Outer Worlds 2‘s development began under Microsoft ownership and the sequel doesn’t have any external publishing agreements like its predecessor did. Therefore, it’s very likely that the decision to launch The Outer Worlds 2 on PS5 came from Microsoft itself. Alongside Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, The Outer Worlds 2 is the latest addition to the list of multiplatform Xbox first-party games that PlayStation users can enjoy in 2025.
