What Does the Morse Code Mean in Civ 7? (A Transmission)

civ 7 morse code guide

Upon reaching the Modern Age, Civilization VII players will be able to research the Radio Technology. Should they decide to do so, there’s a chance that they’ll receive a special transmission, to which they’ll need to respond using one of two preset messages. The only problem is, both the transmission itself and the two possible responses are written entirely in Morse code.

Those unfamiliar with dots and dashes will likely have no idea how to respond to this transmission, which could prove to be costly a little further down the line. Choosing the best response to the Civ 7 Morse code message will provide a fairly decent reward, but choosing the wrong one will hit Civilization VII players with an extremely harsh punishment.

How to Respond to the Morse Code Message in Civ 7

Upon receiving the Morse code message, players should choose the first response, as doing so will reward them with +900 Science a little further down the line (around ten turns, give or take). If they decide to choose the second response, they’ll instead be punished with -50% Science for the next three turns. Weighing up the two possible outcomes, it should be a pretty easy decision for most players.

What Do the Morse Code Messages Mean in Civ 7?

The initial message that players receive is -.-. –.- -.. . .- ….- .-. -.-, which translates to “CQDEA4RK”. “CQ” means “call” or “calling”, “DE” means “from” or “this is”, and “K” means “over”. “A4R” is likely the alias of the other operator or the location that they’re transmitting from. Putting all of this together, the message reads something along the lines of “This is A4R calling. Over“.

The first of the two possible responses is “–. .- — — …. .– ..–..”, which, once decrypted, becomes “GAOMHW?” “GA” means “good afternoon” or “go ahead” and “OM” means “old man”, which is a term used to refer to any male radio operator. “HW” means “how do you copy?”. The response basically acknowledges the initial transmission and asks the sender if they are receiving the return message okay.

The second possible response is “–.- .- –. ….. .—“, which is Morse code for “QAG5J”. “QAG” is a code given to pilots that instructs them to arrange their flight to fly over a specific place at a specific time. In this case, 5J is presumably the location that they should fly over, but a time is not given. Given the incorrect syntax and the fact that we don’t even know the other operator, we can safely deduce that this is not a good response.

Nothing heard. Poor operator. End of transmission.

If players choose the first response, the other person will respond with “Good afternoon dear old man, you are perfectly readable, have an extremely strong signal, and a perfect tone”. If they choose the second option, he’ll instead say “Nothing heard. Poor operator. End of transmission”. As mentioned above, players will receive -50% Science for three turns if they choose the second of the two possible responses, which could be catastrophic for those hoping to secure a Science victory.
