There is a lot of anticipation surrounding Toy Story 5, considering how beloved the Pixar franchise is. All four previous movies have delivered fantastic stories, a wide variety of characters, and plots that have emotionally impacted the audience.
Woody and Buzz Lightyear have always been the focal points of movies, but that could change in the next film. While Toy Story 4 introduced a new character in Forky while bringing back Bo Peep, Tim Allen has hinted that a previously underutilized character from the franchise will be more important this time around.

What Has Tim Allen Teased?
Allen has been providing plenty of details about what people can expect from Toy Story 5 and how the recording process is going. The voice of Buzz revealed to Good Morning America, “Toy Story 5, I’ve already begun. I’m into the third act now, it’s remarkable what they’ve done. Typically, with Pixar, they didn’t say I couldn’t say anything. But there’s a lot of real intrigue with Buzz. Jessie’s in big trouble, and she needs help. It’s a really cool thing.”
Allen obviously knows the entire plot at this point, given he’s in the third act of the movie when it comes to the recording process, and he’s happily revealing little glimpses about what’s to come. While the experienced actor didn’t give away too much information, the fact that Jessie is going to be in trouble is an intriguing situation as it points to the possibility of her being in danger and needing to be rescued by the rest of the gang. That will likely be a featured part of the story, and many people will be happy with giving Jessie a larger role in Toy Story 5.
Why Jessie Was Previously Underutilized
Jessie joined the franchise in Toy Story 2 and played a key part in that movie. Her emotional backstory is explained as the Round Up Gang trying to convince Woody to leave Andy and join them. In the end, Jessie and Bullseye go in the other direction with Woody, which also leads to her being a major part of Toy Story 3. She was effectively the female lead for the entire franchise, which brought something different in comparison to Woody and Buzz, which is necessary.
However, in Toy Story 4, she took a significant backseat, which was a shame. Pixar brought Bo Peep back, and she slotted into the female lead role that Jessie had been occupying. Bo was more than capable of being alone and solving problems for herself, which Jessie had been doing. Having two important female characters would have been a positive step for the franchise, but Jessie was barely featured in the movie. She became a side character alongside the likes of Slinky Dog and Rex, and while there’s nothing wrong with those characters, people expected to see more of Jessie as a character. She could easily have gotten out of the RV and joined Buzz on the adventure, mainly due to the romance that was created during the previous movie.
Why It’s A Positive For Toy Story 5
It’s a positive situation because Jessie, potentially being the lead character, would bring something completely new to the franchise. With Woody’s unknown whereabouts heading into this one, he could take a backseat to allow Jessie to step into the lead role. Even though her being in danger won’t let her showcase her usual actions, flipping the script on her personality might not be bad. Having a more diverse movie that allows some of the underutilized characters the chance to step up is needed when it comes to the fifth installment of any franchise.
Everyone knows what a Toy Story movie built around Woody and Buzz looks like, as there have been four of them already. If Pixar wants to continue building this universe and creating more movies in this franchise, then other characters must be more prominent. Of all the current options, Jessie makes the most sense to be thrust into the limelight, and by the sounds of Allen’s comments, that’s precisely what will happen.
Audiences were disappointed by how little Jessie was featured in Toy Story 4; therefore, the fact Pixar appears to be addressing that is a positive situation as audiences will likely appreciate that taking place. There’s a lot more that can be done with her character, and developing her individual story will be a positive situation for this movie, even if it’s going to have her in peril. Allen has given enough of a tease that fans of the franchise are now excited about what could take place in Toy Story 5, and that proves how popular Jessie is as a character that Pixar would want to focus more on her. Plus, there’s the chance for Buzz’s relationship with Jessie developing further which audiences are fans of.
