Key Takeaways

  • Scary Movie reboot should spoof modern horror trends like social media influencers and cheesy slashers.
  • Original Scary Movies spoofed classics like Scream, The Exorcist, and Paranormal Activity.
  • New Scary Movie should also poke fun at recent hits like Smile and The Black Phone to stay relevant.

As someone who grew up in the 1990s, I loved the Scary Movie franchise. I remember seeing one of the movies in theaters as a pre-teen… with our moms sitting in the theater in another row. They weren’t thrilled with the sometimes inappropriate jokes or storylines, but they knew we appreciated how the films poked fun at the horror genre. Ever since I saw Carrie as an eleven-year-old, which was admittedly a bit young to see that Stephen King classic, I’ve been fascinated by spooky stories that examine our fears. And I love that the Scary Movie franchise proves that it’s possible to also laugh at some of the tropes and storylines that endure.

I was thrilled to read that Variety reported that there will be a reboot of Scary Movie from the Wayan Bros. and I can’t wait to see it. I have some ideas about the horror movies that the Scary Movie reboot should talk about.

What The Wayan Bros. Should Include In Their Scary Movie Reboot

I think the Scary Movie reboot needs to poke fun at remakes and sequels, similar to the tone of Scream (2022) and Scream 6. While the original movie featured a take on Ghostface named Doofy Gilmore (Dave Sheridan), the reboot should address the way that Ghostface has evolved over the franchise. Although the original killers were directly connected to Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) or family members, the more recent villains have been after fame and fortune. Scary Movie has a great opportunity to feature a killer who is a social media personality, an influencer, or a reality TV celebrity. I think this would be funny and would also make the movie feel contemporary.

I also think that the Scary Movie reboot should feature a character who loves corny horror movies that are guilty pleasures. Since Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) already talked about the elevated horror genre in Scream (2022), it would be too much for Scary Movie to feature a character who loves the same types of films. Instead, the reboot should make fun of cheesy slashers and paranormal tales, like The Open House and the latest in the franchise, Jeepers Creepers: Reborn.

It would also be fun if the Scary Movie reboot addressed Smile and The Black Phone, which are two of the most impressive horror movies of the 2020s. Although The Black Phone is scary because it’s so sad, the Scary Movie villain could be a version of The Grabber. They could also make people grin in creepy ways, like the entity in Smile. Although I’ll be happy with whichever villain the Wayan Bros. chose, I think these monsters have helped define the 2020s horror genre, and it would be interesting to see them included. There’s definitely a way to poke fun at all the scary smiles in the genre, and a new Scary Movie wouldn’t be complete without them.

What Horror Movies Were Spoofed In The Scary Movie Franchise?

Anna Faris as Cindy in Scary Movie

The first Scary Movie pokes fun at several horror movies, including The Blair Witch Project, Friday the 13th, The Sixth Sense, The Shining, and Halloween. The inaugural film also spoofs Scream the most. The opening sequence features Carmen Electra as Drew Decker, which is a take on Drew Barrymore playing Casey Becker. Fans are curious about the Scream 7 opening scene, but nothing compares to Casey’s scene. The main character, Cindy Campbell, is also a combination of two of the most iconic final girls in the horror genre: Julie James in I Know What You Did Last Summer and Sidney Prescott in Scream.

Scary Movie 2 features a memorable parody of The Exorcist, Scary Movie 3 spoofs Signs and The Ring, and Scary Movie 4 is a take on The Grudge, Saw, The Village, and War of the Worlds. Finally, Scary Movie 5, which is the least popular, is about the Blumhouse Paranormal Activity franchise along with Black Swan and Mama.

It will be interesting to see which horror movies are chosen for the new Scary Movie. As Variety reported, Keenen Ivory, Shawn, and Marlon Wayans made a statement about the Scary Movie reboot, and they sound just as excited as fans. The statement reads:

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new ‘Scary Movie’ and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
