The Case for and Against Ghost of Yotei Receiving Legends Multiplayer
Ghost of Yotei is one of the many heavy-hitters scheduled for launch this year. Developer Sucker Punch has taken an unexpected route with the beloved Ghost of Tsushima by introducing a new protagonist and fresh setting that takes place 300 years after the events of the first game. The unexpected route Ghost of Yotei takes promises a compelling new story focused on the main character Atsu and her quest for vengeance.
With this change, there are already significant departures being made from Ghost of Tsushima. From the introduction of matchlock guns to the story being set at the beginning of the Edo period, some features in Ghost of Yotei are bound to feel quite different from its predecessor. While these differences are clear, what remains unclear is whether Ghost of Yotei will offer its own version of Legends or not. Ghost of Tsushima‘s co-op mode offered a fun multiplayer experience, and Ghost of Yotei bringing its own mode to the table could have its benefits and disadvantages.

The Argument For a Fresh Legends Mode
One of the biggest arguments in favor of Ghost of Yotei featuring its own multiplayer option is that it was a big hit among Ghost of Tsushima‘s player base. It may not have reached the same heights as the game’s main story, but many players enjoyed the mode and still continue to play. Also, the fact that it was a free add-on made the experience even more rewarding for a lot of gamers. Ghost of Yotei choosing to feature its own version of Legends could offer improvements to bring fans an even greater multiplayer experience.
There is also the issue of a brand-new timeline to consider. Being set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, the current version of Legends will be outdated in terms of setting and weapons. A co-op mode included with Ghost of Yotei could bring players a lot of fun weapon options to utilize in a multiplayer experience that wouldn’t exactly make sense for the original Legends.
Ghost of Yotei is introducing dual-wield weapons, which could bring an extra level of fun to a co-op mode’s combat mechanics.
The Argument Against a New Legends Mode
A glaring issue for such a mode attached to Ghost of Yotei is that it could potentially mark the end of the original Legends. If not the end, it would likely cause the player count to dwindle, at the very least. Ghost of Tsushima‘s co-op mode may not be able to offer the more advanced weapons of its successor, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case.
Instead of a completely separate co-op mode in Ghost of Yotei, updating the current iteration of Legends may offer the best of both worlds. To avoid splitting the player count in half, updating the current Legends with a game mode that showcases Ghost of Yotei‘s setting and weapons may be the better option. However, this is likely a lot easier said than done.
It was recently announced that Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is set to get its own anime adaptation. As of now, the series is planned for a 2027 launch.
Legends is Stuck at a Crossroads
Ultimately, it’s difficult to say which route would be better for Legends. On the one hand, a brand-new take included in the base version of Ghost of Yotei would be thrilling, but on the other hand, it risks taking attention away from the original co-op game. Despite this difficult choice, there are likely to be players who prefer Ghost of Tsushima‘s era, leading them to stick with the original over a new interpretation. As the wait for more Ghost of Yotei news continues, Sucker Punch will hopefully give more insight into the fate of Legends.
