Summary

  • Call of Duty faces strong competition with games like Apex Legends and Destiny 2, offering new gameplay experiences.
  • Robocop: Rogue City and Metro Exodus provide unique alternatives with power fantasies and survival elements.
  • Valorant combines high-impact gameplay with hero abilities, offering a compelling alternative to Call of Duty.

Though the absolute dominance of the Call of Duty franchise has waned since its peak in the early 2010s, it’s still going strong today. However, the big difference these days is that not only does it have competition, but its competition is actively trying to shake things up and try new things, meaning there are fewer and fewer games that are a lot like Call of Duty anymore.

Call of Duty games tend to lean towards arcade-action rather than the more realistic, but if a Call of Duty is looking for something a little different that demands a different play style, then there are few better options than Hell Let Loose.

Set during WW2, players engage in hyper-realistic combat in squad-based action scenarios and vast brilliant maps. A Call of Duty fan is going to love the intensity of the action and the different look at WW2 that Call of Duty games haven’t quite done before. There are few shooters more intense than this one.

Considering that the Call of Duty games are so influenced by 80s action films, it’s something of a surprise that they haven’t veered more heavily in that direction by embracing the cheese and gonzo action entirely. Luckily, games like Robocop: Rogue City do exactly what they say on the tin.

This game is a simple straightforward power fantasy of the best variety, embodying the robot man himself, and blasting criminals with guts galore. It fulfills the fantasy of being Robocop better than any other game and is a great alternative to Call of Duty to blow off some steam.

Though once upon a time, the Halo and Call of Duty franchises used to be sworn enemies, things have changed, and now Bungie’s Destiny 2 is a compelling MMO alternative to the Call of Duty franchise that keeps some of the great shooting but adds in a whole host of RPG elements, PvE gameplay, and an armory’s worth of brilliant exotic weapons.

For a Call of Duty player looking for a gameplay experience that’s more cooperative, with sci-fi lore, and more RPG mechanics, then Destiny 2 is the place to go. There are potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay to be had here, making it a great alternative if Call of Duty just isn’t hitting the same buttons anymore.

From time to time, the Call of Duty franchise has tried to embrace some survival and stealth mechanics to mixed results. However, if you’re a gamer who loves that kind of gameplay, then there is no better game to try than the wonderful Metro: Exodus.

Set in post-apocalyptic Russia, players are tasked with escorting a train of survivors out of the titular metro and across the vast wasteland of Russia to try and find a new better home. The shooting is very visceral, the stealth and survival elements are punchy, and it’s all-around an unforgettable FPS experience well worth a try.

It’s well known that Infinity Ward, the studio behind the legendary Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, suffered a lot of brain drain, with many of its greatest designers and staff leaving to form their own studio, Respawn Entertainment, which released the widely beloved Titanfall and Titanfall 2.

However, Respawn’s greatest achievement would come with Apex: Legends, a multiplayer battle royale game that doesn’t skimp on the studio’s trademark brilliant gunplay, but also introduces complexity through different characters, shifting maps, and impressively deep lore. For Call of Duty fans looking for a change of pace but wanting to retain the tight gunplay, Apex: Legends is a great choice.

At a certain point, the Call of Duty franchise became so dominant that other studios saw little point in trying to directly compete, innovating the FPS genre in different directions. However, The Finals, decided to say screw it and directly compete with Warzone, delivering a tight fast-paced FPS that gives any battle royale a run for its money.

More than any other game, Valorant seems to sap away the audience from Call of Duty, despite being quite different. Where Call of Duty was inspired by the likes of Doom and Medal of Honor, Valorant wears its Counter-Strike influences on its sleeve but infuses that addictive high-impact gameplay with hero shooter abilities and incredibly well-designed maps.

For Call of Duty players, Valorant offers high-risk, tactical, and high skill-ceiling gunplay that demands absolute excellence at all points and cooperation. It essentialises the very best of the Call of Duty franchise, infuses it with the greatness of PC-based shooters, and adds some hero-shooter spice to the mix. What results is one of the most compelling alternatives to Call of Duty ever made.
