Well-intentioned decisions made by the player can lead to deaths that seem wholly unfair. Beloved characters might be killed for the stupidest reasons, the choices may be misleading or there may be a profound tragic irony to these unfair deaths. Here are some of the most unfair deaths to elicit outrage and annoyance from players.

Ashley and Chris Received a Dual Decapitation

Until Dawn’s Wendigos Can Mimic Humans to Lure them to an Unjust Death

Until Dawn filters in plenty of information to deal with the wendigos that are chasing the protagonists. But for those players who aren’t observant, there are a few times when that lack of curiosity could be their downfall. When Ashley hears the voice of Jess in the sewers, she will have the option to go look for her wounded friend.

What Ashley may not know is that the wendigo can mimic humans and what lies in wait for her is not Jess. When she opens the trapdoor, a wendigo bursts out and decapitates her. And if Chris is following closely, he will hear Jess’s cries and could meet the same fate at that very same trapdoor. To be fair though, a player is probably trying to get them both killed if they send Chris in after her.

It seems like a no-win situation and one of them is doomed to die. Unless…

Dr. Clarice Stokes is not a playable character in House of Ashes, but some players certainly took a shine to her. That’s why they may have gone against their better instincts when choosing to help her. When Rachel finds Clarice in the temple, it is obvious that Clarice has been bitten by one of the vampires and is not doing well.

When they meet up with the others, they must decide whether to take Clarice with them rather than abandoning her in the caves. Trying to do something nice for an NPC in Supermassive Games is always a bit of a gamble. She inevitably transforms into a vampire and kills Eric.

This is yet another instance of Ashley failing to understand the situation in Until Dawn, and it spells disaster for someone else. While Emily is fleeing, she can get bitten by a wendigo. Then, when she finds the others as they seek refuge in the basement, Ashley and Mike will notice her bite.

They leap to the conclusion that Emily is now infected because of the bite, and she is a ticking time bomb waiting to transform. Clues hidden around the game and the lore, as explained by Jack Fiddler, show that whatever is causing the mutations on the mountain is not spread through bites. However, Mike can choose to shoot Emily to eliminate a perceived threat to the group’s safety that never existed. Ashley will then find out they were wrong, but too late.

Julia Drinks A Beer

Misadventure and Thirst Brings Death in Man of Medan

In Man of Medan Julia and Alex go diving to explore the wreckage of a downed World War 2 plane. After a potentially botched proposal on Alex’s part, the two will be alerted to some kind of chaos back on the boat. Julia rushes to the surface and risks decompression sickness from the quick change in pressure. But at this stage, she seems fine.

Later, Julia is offered a beer by her brother Conrad. If she drinks the beer she will inevitably die, but not right away. Alcohol is extremely dangerous for divers who might be at risk of decompression sickness, and as an experienced diver, Julia would know this and should have avoided alcohol after coming up quickly from the depths. Players may still opt to let her drink the beer. If she does take a drink at the very end, after she has survived pirates, hallucinatory gas, and a dangerously decaying ghost ship, she will succumb to decompression sickness.

Fliss Stabs Brad

Mutual Hallucinations in Man Of Medan Makes Fliss See a Grim Reaper

  • Featured in: The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan

The “big bad” in Man of Medan isn’t the pirates or ghosts, but the hallucinogen the ship was originally transporting. It is affecting those aboard and making them see all kinds of horrors. In some instances, they see their companions as monsters and specters. If Fliss encounters Brad while she is still affected by the gas, she will see him as the Grim Reaper.

The player can choose to stab the “Grim Reaper”, making Fliss kill Brad by mistake. However, this whole encounter can be avoided if Fliss goes outside to get fresh air. Getting Brad a gas mask will also prevent him from trying to kill Fliss.

Very early in The Quarry, the player will have the opportunity to inspect the lock on the walk-in freezer in the camp kitchen to find out that it is locked. This is obviously a massive health and safety issue. Someone could get trapped and freeze to death!

If Kaitlyn makes it all the way back to the lodge, she discovers a talking toy rabbit that can be used as a distraction when trying to get away from the werewolf that is chasing her. If Abigail didn’t grab the rabbit at the beginning of the game, then Kaitlyn hiding in the freezer herself may seem like the only option. If she ends up in the freezer with the werewolf, she will be mauled to death. If she ends up there on her own, she will freeze to death.
