Arguably one of the most unique and complicated characters, Tony Stark has accomplished a lot of good in the world but has also achieved his share of bad. Seen as the problem child of the Avengers, the reputation of Iron Man has had its share of setbacks.

However, just as complicated as the Earth 616 Iron Man are his endless amounts of variants. From dictators to celestial entities, Iron Man has endless possibilities. Here are some more of Iron Man’s strongest versions in the comics.

The Tony Stark of the unofficial Earth-TRN591 is not the first to gain the powers of the Sorcerer Supreme but is the most recent. In this world, global peace has been achieved thanks to the Avengers.

Iron Maniac

The Only Sane Soul In A World Gone Mad

  • First Appearance: All New X-Men Annual #1
  • Universe: Earth-5012

In a twisted alternate Earth, the Avengers failed while fighting the Skrulls and were slain by Tittanus. With the entire roster scattered through the wind, only a few were saved, one of which being Tony Stark. Unfortunately, after this event, Reed Richards would turn on his friends and begin killing what remained of the heroes of Earth.

After fleeing to Latveria, Tony decides to take over the world to save it from Reed Richards. This did not work out as the new “evil Tony” was bested by Richard and teleported to Earth 616, where the world was an insane version of what Iron Maniac called normal.

Unfortunately, the suit’s artificial intelligence began to counter Tony’s organic material and decided that it would be better off as metal. Even though Tony worked endlessly to fix the issue, the suit would take over Tony’s body and mind and twist him into a mass of flesh and machine. He now seeks to turn the world into cyborg hybrids with the new technology he created.

Pheonix-Killer

Attempts To Neutralize Power

marvel-snap-phoenix-force
  • First Appearance: Avengers vs X-Men #5
  • Universe: Earth-616

Though the managing of the Phoenix Force and its immensely destructive abilities is typically a job reserved for mutants, the X-Men, and their associates, the force proves to be deadly enough to warrant help from outside forces within the Marvel universe, including the Avengers and Iron Man.

Appropriately dubbed the Phoenix-Killer Armor, this suit was constructed to complete one job. During an Avengers vs X-Men run, Earth’s safety was at stake with the cosmic fiery energy that was the Phoenix Force, having sought out Hope Summers as its new host. Both the Avengers and X-Men worked to mitigate this threat in different ways, the X-Men working to protect Hope Summers and the Avengers working to stop the Phoenix Force entirely.

The bulky megazord-esque machine designed by Tony Stark was set to kill the Phoenix Force through the use of a powerful disruptor. It proved powerful enough to damage the Phoenix Force, but not enough to initially fit its title of the cosmic energy’s killer. The Phoenix was split into five pieces, each of which was held by an X-Men member. Together, these parts formed an armor that could destroy the Phoenix Force.

Hulk Buster Mark XLIV

The Incredible Suit

Hulkbuster The Avengers
  • First Appearance: Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Universe: Earth-199999

Another armor constructed with the sole purpose of killing an incredibly powerful entity in the Marvel Universe. Though the Hulk is one of Iron Man’s teammates, and often a founding member of the Avengers, the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Tony Stark, of all people, knew to keep one eye open on him. A suit that can withstand the Hulk’s strength and potentially neutralize him should he ever need to.

The Hulk Buster Armor, also known as the Iron Man Armor: Mark XLIV, bears a striking resemblance to the Hulk itself and mirrors a lot of his abilities. It possesses superhuman strength, capable of going toe-to-toe with the Hulk as seen in the MCU. It also possesses a similar level of durability, speed, stamina, and reflexes as the green beast. But the Hulk Buster proves to be even more powerful than the Hulk.

Unlike the Hulk, the Hulk Buster can fly, fire missiles, blast repulsor beams, and use autonomic prehensile propulsion technology. This suit greatly succeeded in its goal, the Age of Ultron movie shows Stark able to subdue the Hulk and knock him out.

4

Exiles

Emperor Stark

Dr Doom and Iron Man
  • First Appearance: Exiles #23
  • Universe: Earth-42777

The version of Iron Man who took over the world. Just the name ‘Exiles Iron Man’ would be enough to evoke imagery of dark power in the minds of fans who have not yet become familiar with this powerful iteration. One look at his suit of armor would effectively portray the dark imagery of power, with the Dr. Doom cloak he wears over his armor, a trophy of his victory over him and everyone else who could have stood in his way.

Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as the iconic villain Doctor Doom confused several fans, including one of his Iron Man co-stars.

His epithet ‘Emperor Stark’ was clearly earned throughout these Exiles comic issues. There, Anthony Stark of Earth-42777 was able to become the undisputed ‘Iron Monarch’ of the world. He took advantage of both sides of a mutant and human war, using his armor to defeat mutants whilst also funding Magneto’s mutant army. He was able to create tech that allowed him to control natural disasters, help the climate issue, and unite the planet through these helpful endeavors.

Victor von Doom, however, attempted to use his status as the monarch of Latveria to challenge Stark’s rising power. But he too would be defeated, joining the list of heroes and villains Iron Man dominated to retain his power.

Iron Lantern

Hal Stark’s Origins

Green Lantern and Iron Man
  • First Appearance: Iron Lantern #1
  • Main Universe Of Residence: The Amalgam Universe

What happens when you mix one of the most powerful pieces of equipment in the DC Universe with one of the most powerful pieces of equipment in the Marvel Universe? You get the Iron Lantern, an Iron Man version whose name would excite the inner child of any comic book or superhero fan. The Invincible Iron Man and the Green Lantern combined.

In this alternate universe amalgamation of DC and Marvel, Hal Stark, an obvious mixture of Hal Jordan and Tony Stark, is the founder of the Stark Aircraft company. A botched flight simulation saw him drawn towards an alien spacecraft that the simulator would crash nearby. Hal Stark found himself injured and wounded. In classic Iron Man fashion, he got himself out of a dangerous situation by building a suit. After seeing an alien die on the spacecraft, Stark created a suit of armor using the alien technology, utilizing a lantern-like battery he discovered in the ruins of the craft to power it.

The suit allowed him to survive his injuries and gave him fantastic tech-based superpowers. He could fly, shoot green energy, generate force fields, and even travel through time, something that not many other versions of Iron Man could do.

2

Superior

A Genius Playing God

Superior Iron Man EA Storyline
  • First Appearance: Superior Iron Man #1
  • Main Universe Of Residence: Earth-616

Potentially one of the most arrogant iterations of Iron Man ever conceived. A villainous version of the character infamously known for the incident in which he returned Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil, his sight back only to have it taken away from it again.

Superior Iron Man once said ‘I’m the most intelligent, capable person on the planet. I’m not playing God – all this time, I’ve been playing human’. That quote encapsulates the psychology of such a character, showing how the usually arrogant Iron Man becomes a megalomaniac with a god complex through this version. During the Axis Event, magical properties caused the morality of all the heroes to be flipped. The spell that caused this to happen was eventually reversed, but Tony Stark managed to prevent such a thing from happening to him, keeping himself in the corrupt state the first spell had put him in.

EA Motive’s Iron Man Doubling Down on Flight Mechanics Would Make One Boss a Natural Choice

EA Motive’s Iron Man really needs to nail its flight mechanics, but if it can do that, then there’s one boss fight that would be a natural fit.

With no morals holding him back, the Superior Iron Man was able to build an empire, deploy killer droids, and create a free application that would grant them physical perfection but would quickly lead to addiction and, once they were dependent, force them to pay a daily fee of $99.99 before they could use it again. He showcased feats of intelligence and cruelty rarely seen in other Iron Man. He truly deserved the title of “superior.”

Iron Hammer

The God Of Tech

Thor and Iron Man
  • First Appearance: Infinity #3
  • Universe: Warp World Earth-616

To be the smartest Avenger is one thing. To be the strongest Avenger is another. To be the former with the abilities and equipment of the latter, is the key to becoming one of the most absurdly powerful versions of Iron Man. The Iron Man with Thor influences – the Iron Hammer.

Stark Odinson is one of the only versions of Iron Man who can truly say he is worthy of lifting Mjolnir, who possesses his own armor and hammer infused with mythological magic and otherworldly technology. The story of Stark Odinson was that his father Howard Odin denied him his true heritage of immortality and godhood. After being ambushed by Dark Elves in a forest and subsequently crippled, he had his life saved by Eitri the Weapon-Smith, who forged a warhammer to rebuild Stark’s strength and spirit.

Stark Odinson wears the Iron Hammer armor, a hybrid of tech from Midgard and Asgard. The hammer, Mjolniron, unlocks the true potential of the armor with the ability to shoot electricity and powerful blasts. Not only that, but it could summon a version of the Bifrost. With the power of gods and the mind of a man playing one, Iron Hammer is a version of the Invincible Iron Man that lives up to the name.
