  • Season 5 of Stranger Things, set in 1987, may uncover more mysteries and big reveals about its anticipated plot.

Netflix has finally unraveled some new information about Stranger Things season five, the upcoming final season of the hit series. However, one fan theory suggests that there might be more to the eye for the popular sci-fi, coming-of-age dramedy in terms of its apparent new threat dubbed Camazotz, as it may not be a Dungeons and Dragons reference at all. When Stranger Things released on Netflix in 2016, it instantly won the hearts of viewers all over the world thanks to its exciting mix of sci-fi and horror, as well as a healthy sprinkle of 1980s pop culture. Throughout season one of Stranger Things, the series drew from popular movies like Stephen King’s Carrie, Ridley Scott’s Aliens, as well as Spielberg’s E.T. and Close Encounters.

Not only did the highly absorbing show, which features a group of misfits plagued by a hostile alternate dimension known as the Upside Down, include references to iconic classic movies, but it also incorporated the use of 1980s music so well with Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, Toto’s “Africa” and Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.”, which honed into its colorful neon vibes and carefree environments – something that would become somewhat of a distraction for the show’s terrifying real threat. As Netflix released the titles for the upcoming season five of Stranger Things, a certain fan theory looks at the episode called “Escape from Camazotz”, and whether it could be a new dimension.

In a post on Stranger Things‘ Reddit, user Barabus33 has offered up a rather intriguing theory about what “Camazotz” in Stranger Things season five episode line-up could actually mean. Those who have watched the hit show will know how many Dungeons and Dragons references there are sewn into Stranger Things‘ core, with viewers even seeing the table-top role-playing game being played in its very first episode. However, although the main point of interest for many about “Camazotz” will be the deity in D&D lore, the god of bats, who also holds influence over the Olman underworld, and is associated with disease and plague, the Redditor offers up another possible suggestion.

In the storyline for the 1962 sci-fi novel, A Wrinkle in Time, the book has a section regarding the planet Camazotz, which has been overtaken by The Black Thing. In the novel’s narrative, the entity is an evil dark shadow that covers Camazotz and controls its people by using mind control. The book explains that this black shadow is the evil that the children are up against in their quest to find Mr. Murray, the children’s father, who has disappeared. So, even though “Camazotz” could very well be a horrific new monster in Stranger Things season five, there’s also the possibility of it being a new dimension introduced to Hawkins, and pulling inspiration from A Wrinkle in Time, especially since the title begins with “Escape from…,” which hints at a location rather than an actual creature, as noted by Barabus33.

Currently, there isn’t a lot of information regarding what fans will see when Stranger Things season five releases sometime in 2025, but what is known is that the new season will be set in 1987, which is only a short time jump from where Stranger Things season four left off in 1986. As the show’s premiere slowly moves into next year, it’s guaranteed that more stories, big reveals and even theories will surely surround the highly anticipated Netflix series.
