Key Takeaways

  • A Stardew Valley player creates a Pokemon mod for the game that replaces pets with the popular pocket monsters.
  • The creator plans to expand the mod to replace enemies and livestock with Pokemon, receiving suggestions from fans.
  • Despite concerns over legal issues, the creator intends to release mod for public use at no cost, confident in fair use protections.

One industrious Stardew Valley player is making an attempt to bring Pokemon into the farming game through a self-made mod. While the mod for Stardew Valley isn’t finished or available to the public yet, its creator is merging the two game worlds by replacing some of the pets with sprites of popular monsters from the Pokemon franchise.

Created by one-man developer ConcernedApe, Stardew Valley has risen since its 2016 launch to become one of the most popular cozy farming sims of all time. It’s also been a common target for the modding community, and popular mod upload site Nexus Mods hosts nearly 200 Stardew Valley mods ranging from graphical changes to full playable expansions. While the new Pokemon-themed mod, currently using the working title PokePets, isn’t ready for release, its creator hopes to add it to Nexus Mods’ list when it’s ready.

Best Stardew Valley Mods For Co-Op

Players enjoying Stardew Valley in co-op mode can spice things up by trying out the following co-op-friendly mods.

Shared on Reddit by user KilledTheCar, the mod in its current state only includes three Pokemon — Mudkip, Shinx, and Absol — which replace the sprites for two of the game’s adoptable cats and one dog. Earlier builds of the game only allowed a farmer to have one cat or dog, but since the Stardew Valley 1.6 update unlocked 12 pets for players to collect through purchasable pet licenses, it opens up many more possibilities for raising a farm full of Pokemon in the modded game. The creator has expressed an interest in releasing the mod for public download at some point after its completion and invites other Reddit users to send them private messages with their ideas and wish lists. Already, Stardew Valley fans have been flooding the initial post with their ideas for replacing the base game’s dogs, cats, and turtles, with Eevee and its various evolved forms getting multiple mentions, and one fan suggesting replacing the game’s horse with a Rapidash.

Stardew Valley Fan Mods Pokemon Into the Game

It’s not just the pets that are getting attention from the community, as many people responding to the post seem to want to go toe-to-toe with Pokemon in Stardew Valley dungeons like the Skull Cavern and Volcano. After some requests, the creator seems to be toying around with the idea of replacing common enemies like slimes and bats with Grimers and Zubats, and even legendary Pokemon may make an appearance after one fan suggested replacing Royal Serpents with Rayquaza. Fans of the game have also pointed out a variety of potential replacements for livestock in the game, and the creator had already been toying around with replacing one color of chicken with Torchic prior to unveiling the project.

In light of Nintendo’s recent string of lawsuits over unauthorized Pokemon usage and action against emulated games, some fans are urging the creator to priced with the project with caution. However, the mod creator seems confident that their actions fall under legal protections for fair use, and while they hope to eventually release the mod for public play, they won’t be charging any money for downloading it.
