Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean Jack Sparrow Future

Summary

  • Disney fired Depp due to legal issues with ex-wife Amber Heard.
  • Reports suggest Depp may return as Jack Sparrow in a new Pirates movie.
  • Depp’s potential return to franchise could be divisive, but fans are hopeful.

Johnny Depp won the hearts of the Pirates of the Caribbean fans with his eccentric and cunning portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately, Disney fired him due to his highly publicized legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, but there are rumors that he could return to the franchise.

Depp had been the face of the Pirates of the Caribbean for nearly two decades until 2018 when Disney decided to let him go amid his ex-wife’s domestic abuse allegations in an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post. Depp denied the allegations, but Disney parted ways with him. Many were sad about Disney’s decision because, for them, there would be no other Captain Jack Sparrow than Depp, and the franchise was centered on him. The Minamata actor sued Heard for defamation in 2019 because the latter’s abuse allegations reportedly damaged his career and reputation. Depp lost the $22.5 million deal to star in the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie after Disney dropped him from the franchise. However, he won his defamation lawsuit against Heard in 2022, and years after his legal victory, some sources claimed that he could return to the franchise.

According to The DisInsider, they received reports that the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie would feature the return of Depp as the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow. Walt Disney Studios is reportedly already preparing to start the production for the next film, and it will be shot at a sound stage in Hollywood. Unfortunately, they don’t have details about the production, including the timeline for when it will officially begin. The outlet, however, noted that they couldn’t get another source to corroborate the report, so they warned the readers to take it with a grain of salt.

Disney Studios Motion Picture Production President Sean Bailey wasn’t closing doors when asked about Depp’s potential comeback into the franchise in a past interview. According to him, they “have a really good, exciting story that honours the films that have come before but also has something new to say.” As for Depp’s return, he said, Disney was “noncommittal at this point.” While it didn’t sound like he was endorsing Depp’s return, many still embraced the statement positively because it appeared that they were also not closing the door when it came to having Depp again in his beloved character. Depp admitted during the defamation trial that he felt “betrayed” when fired from the franchise. Depp said:

It was like somebody hit me in the back of the head with a 2×4… Captain Jack Sparrow was a character I built from the ground up and was something that I, of course, put a lot of [myself] into the character and also having worked on these films with these people and added much of myself, much of my own re-writing of the dialogue and scenes and jokes. I didn’t quite understand how, after that long relationship and quite a successful relationship certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent.

Depp’s potential return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will likely be divisive. Even if he won the legal battle against Heard, the controversy could have a lingering impact. However, Depp won the court of public opinion during the defamation trial when the legal dispute was televised and his victory only cemented the fact that many still favored him. Not only that, it is also a sign that many are rooting for him. In fact, many fans have been campaigning for his return to the franchise. A Pirates of the Caribbean comeback could potentially revive the franchise. However, Depp also said that he would only reconsider a return if Disney would issue a sincere apology and offer him the right deal.
