Romancing SaGa 2: What is Abdication?
As previously noted, abdication is a feature in Romancing SaGa 2 that can be accessed by interacting with the throne in Castle Avalon, and it allows players to select a new Emperor. JRPG fans can abdicate the throne once per generation, and there are a couple of reasons that they might want to do so.
Romancing SaGa 2: Should You Abdicate?
It is recommended that players abdicate the throne every generation, as doing so will increase the rate at which they unlock formations. For the uninitiated, formations determine the positions that units assume in battle, and tactical RPG fans will unlock a new one every time a class becomes Emperor for the first time. For example, players will unlock the Imperial Shield formation the first time that they make a Heavy Infantry unit Emperor, and they will unlock the Imperial Attack formation the first time that they make a Light Infantry unit Emperor.
As such, a player that never abdicates the throne can (typically) only unlock a maximum of one formation every generation. By contrast, a player that consistently engages with the abdication feature has a chance to unlock a second formation every generation, and having access to additional formations can definitely be useful against challenging foes.
It is actually possible to unlock many formations during a single generation, despite the fact that the throne can only be abdicated once. Indeed, players can repeatedly force new Emperor selections by allowing their Emperors to repeatedly succumb to permadeath in Romancing Saga 2. Fans that choose classes that have never before sat on the throne during those selections will continually unlock new formations.
Unlocking new formations is not the only reason to abdicate the throne, though, as players may want to use the feature if they are unhappy with their current Emperor. Indeed, while it is often possible to recruit units that can cover for an Emperor’s shortcomings, fans who are struggling to make an Emperor work should feel free to use abdication to replace them with another class.
Romancing SaGa 2: A Warning About Abdication
In general, there are no penalties associated with abdicating in Romancing SaGa 2. However, abdicating the throne in the middle of certain scenarios, like the one that centers around the eruption at Mt. Comroon, can lead to undesirable outcomes. Fans of party-based RPGs are thus advised to make a save before abdicating, as that will allow them to roll back their progress if the feature causes any quest-related issues.
