Re:Zero features a world filled with dangerous wonders of unimaginable proportions. When Subaru was transported to this new world, the last thing he thought was that he would have such a grueling experience. Unfortunately, the world of Re:Zero is unforgiving, and without the proper lineage, title, or abilities, most will always remain at the bottom of the totem pole. With magical spells that instantly end life and divine protections that halt any transgressions, the truly powerful individuals in Re:Zero stand levels above the majority and are near unstoppable beings.

These isekai anime protagonists don’t need to be asked twice when it comes to a fight.

However, there is even a step above unstoppable where exceptional individuals have unique powers known as Authorities. Authorities are abilities that transcend the laws of reality to create a set of functions that apply powerful effects to specific individuals. These Authorities can only be used primarily by witches and Sin Archbishops that belong to the peak of power inside Re:Zero. Of the small group of Authorities in Re:Zero, some stand above the rest. Here are the strongest Authorities in Re:Zero and who uses them.

  • First Appearance: Episode 37

Sekhmet is a powerful, centuries-old witch who commands the Authority of Sloth. Sekhmet can immobilize targets, crush them, and fend off their attacks in the blink of an eye. In the past, Sekhmet used her Authority to battle against Volcanica, a divine dragon, so it is safe to say that she possesses one of the most substantial Authorities, even though there have been new variations of her ability over time.

Lye’s Authority Of Gluttony

Can Erase A Person’s Existence

lye batenkaitos frenzy
  • First Appearance: Episode 26

Lye appeared along with his siblings, Rui and Roy, a Sin Archbishop who appeared as a powerful adversary to Subaru and his friends. As Lye was a mysterious antagonist during the lead-up to the conflict, it was revealed he possessed the Authority of Gluttony. Using this ability, Lye is able to do a number of vile things, one being eating the names and memories of people in the world. Doing this provided Lye with two options, which are called Lunar and Solar Eclipse.

Utilizing Lunar Eclipse, Lye can take advantage of the memories and skills he devoured from his target, increasing his abilities accordingly. Using Solar Eclipse, Lye can change himself into those he’s devoured by accessing their name. This Authority is an increasingly difficult threat to deal with as those who are affected by the Authority basically cease to have ever existed.

Capella’s Authority Of Lust

A Power That Manipulates Biology At A Molecular Level

Capella Emerada Lugunica transforming in Re:Zero
  • First Appearance: Episode 53

Capella’s Authority of Lust is very reminiscent of the use of a philosopher’s stone from Full Metal Alchemist. Capella is able to manipulate physical forms and transform and transfigure them into any shape she pleases. Capella demonstrates this by transforming different parts of her body into several appendages, such as the head of a lion, growing wings on her back, or giving herself fangs.

Capella’s power extends past her own body and can even be used on regular people, animals, and dead bodies. Capella can turn almost anything into anything she wants; she has turned her own body into a black dragon and created an army of Demi-beasts from a field of corpses. There seems to be no upper limit to this Authority, which makes it one of the most significant threats in Re:Zero.

Regulus Corneas’ Authority of Greed – Lions Heart

The Power To Be Invincible

Re Zero regulus corneas
  • First Appearance: Episode 26

Regulus is considered one of, if not the strongest and most polarizing, Sin Archbishops and is also one of the elders in the group. As an astute symbol of power, Regulus controls the Authority of Greed he calls, Lion’s Heart. This ability provides Regulus with a number of effects that ultimately make him invincible. Essentially, Lions Heart stops Regulus’ time, preventing his body from aging, receiving damage, and from physical occurrences from interacting with him.

This Authority seemingly makes Regulus invincible, as his body can not be affected by any source from the world due to it not existing in the world because of its stopped time. However, this ability does prove difficult for Regulus, which he circumvented by splitting the Authority in two. The second ability, Little King, shared the Authority with others, which shared the burden but increased the effectiveness.

Clind’s Unknown Authority

An Elevated Form Of Disintegration

clind re zero
  • First Appearance: Episode 50

One of the more mysterious characters in Re:Zero is Clind, a seemingly minor character who possesses great power and understanding. Serving as a loyal patron to the Annerose at the start of the series, Clind has demonstrated that he is no simple butler.

Clind has revealed his power on a few occasions, and while the Authority he controls has not been named, it has been demonstrated to be immensely powerful. On one occasion, Clind completely devoured a target’s space, eradicating every piece of them down to the blood in their veins until nothing was left.

Pandora’s Authority Of Vainglory

An Unparalleled Power Of Reality

Pandora speaking to Emilia in Re:Zero
  • First Appearance: Episode 43

Pandora serves as one of the main antagonists in Re:Zero, being a Sin Archbishop and having great influence over the Witch Cult. Appearing as an innocent young girl, Pandora is anything but, having a considerably ruthless personality. Pandora controls the Authroiy of Vainglory, a power that has not been fully explored or explained inside Re:Zero. However, there have been instances of her using her power to do fantastical things.

At a base understanding, Pandora is able to re-write reality, affecting time and space as a whole. She can use this power to undo certain phenomena, manipulate a person’s memories, and even resurrect herself after death. While there are several factors that need to be present for her to do so, it is seen that she has no limit to what or how much she can change.

Subaru’s Authority Of Return By Death

A Linchpin In The Re:Zero Series

Subaru giving his speech to Priestella in Re:Zero
  • First Appearance: Episode 1

Subaru’s most defining trait is that he controls an unknown Authority called Return By Death. While predominately an unremarkable person in this new fantasy world, Subaru can utilize his ability to come back from the dead at a previously determined “Save Point” after being killed.

This allows Subaru a re-do when the outcome of a situation does not result in the best outcome, as he can choose to take his own life to revert back, or if he is slain in battle, he can return to try again. Unfortunately, while this ability is incredibly powerful, Subaru is unable to control when or where he returns; this return may span days or possibly even years. Subaru is able to maintain his memories after a return, giving him the advantage going forward.

Aldebaran’s Unknown Authority

A More Tame Version Of Return By Death

al re zero
  • First Appearance: Episode 12

Al is mostly an underrated supporting character in Re:Zero, sharing a number of similar traits to Subaru, like being summoned from Japan and having a unique revival Authority. Aldebaran, or Al as most call him, was a former knight of Pricilla and her camp until it was disbanded due to her death. Al’s unknown Authority is similar in strength and scope to Subaru’s Return by Death, but the differences make it more potent. Al must designate an area, like a domain, to activate his Authority. Once he does so, he traps himself and his target in seemingly random roles.

The victim role allows Al to return after being killed with his memories intact. This can last an infinite amount of time, enabling the victim to prepare for the reset accordingly. This gives Al a key advantage when facing strong opponents. Secondly, the aggressor role traps Al in a confrontation, allowing him to infinitely return to life without his memories. The secondary target is also trapped in a loop, forced to keep killing Al until they surrender or lose their sanity.
