Persona 4 Golden has two sports teams players can join: basketball and soccer. Both teams become available on 4/19 when you overhear two students talking about joining a team, but can also be joined at any point after that day, whenever you have free time after school.
Whichever sports team you choose you join, this will begin the Strength Arcana social link. This choice is important and can’t be undone, so here’s everything you need to know about which sports team to join so you make the best decision.

Basketball & Soccer Team Differences In Persona 4 Golden
Mechanically speaking, there are no differences in terms of social link rewards between which team you join, as the one you join will begin the Strength social link and they will rank up in similar manners. The main difference comes from who the social links will revolve around:
- Basketball – Kou Ichijo
- Soccer – Daisuke Nagase
The biggest gameplay difference you’ll see is having to choose different dialogue options for the individual ranks of each social link to get points toward that next rank, as each character has a different personality.
The story you experience during the social link will be very different depending on the team you join, but no matter what both characters will be involved in both stories, as Kou and Daisuke are old friends. Most of the social links will involve all three of you hanging out together, but the main story and what you will be talking about will revolve around the character whose team you joined.
The team you join also won’t affect when or how you get to meet AI and begin her social link.

Which Sports Team Should You Pick In Persona 4 Golden
There really is no wrong answer, as both stories are told very well. That being said, Kou’s story goes a bit deeper than Daisuke’s and may be the ideal story to see if you’re only planning on playing through the game once. To see the other person’s story you’ll need to start a new playthrough and join the other team. This isn’t the only social link in the game where you’ll have to choose like this, as the other school club you can join has similar limitations, further incentivizing playing through the game multiple times. The secret boss in this game is only found in New Game Plus, giving you just another reason to consider going through the game again.
