One Type of Fortnite Skin Could Feel Less Special After December 2024

fortnite absolute doom character lineup

When it comes to Fortnite, special cosmetics and skins have become synonymous with the increasingly popular battle royale title. From original skins, like Jonesy, to its continuously growing list of high-profile franchise crossovers, Fortnite has staked its claim as a game fueled by unique character options. One of its most notable crossovers has been with media juggernaut Marvel, which has introduced plenty of beloved heroes and villains to the game’s world.

Once Fortnite started featuring characters from Marvel, there was no going back. Iconic Marvel characters are now expected to be regular additions. Not only does Fortnite feature a variety of skins, but many major events within the game have revolved around these comic book icons. The current Season 4 of Chapter 5 features Doctor Doom as a focal point, while the annual Fortnitemares event has added Mephisto as well. Despite this long history of showcasing many of Marvel’s best characters, the arrival of Marvel Rivals in December could change everything.

What’s Your Favorite Marvel Skin in Fortnite?

Fortnite has dozens of Marvel skins, as the two companies have come together several times over the years and delivered pretty extensive collaborations.Although I own some Marvel skins in Fortnite, most were Battle Pass rewards. A Fresh Way to Experience Marvel Characters

Marvel Rivals is set to be one of the biggest releases of December, as the brand is seeking to bring many of its character roster into the world of hero shooters. The 6v6 combat-focused game is a fresh take on Marvel, and this could ultimately signal some trouble for Fortnite and its many Marvel-based collaborations. Like Fortnite, Marvel Rivals boasts a free-to-play experience. One of its biggest advantages, though, is that it offers a game fully based on the heroes and villains of Marvel Comics.

The Marvel brand doesn’t do crossovers with just any game, which made Fortnite one of the premiere places to experience specific characters outside of official game adaptations. However, once Marvel Rivals hits, fans of the comics and movies will get a brand-new outlet to fight as some of their favorite characters. Another highlight of Marvel Rivals is a solid blend of A-list characters and more underrated names. Of course, Fortnite adding Mephisto is a deeper cut into Marvel’s lore, but Marvel Rivals showcasing Black Panther to Jeff the Land Shark demonstrates how the hero shooter plans to really take advantage of the Marvel Comics roster.

Marvel Rivals
is scheduled to release on December 6, 2024.

With a fully Marvel-focused game featuring a wide variety of characters, some Fortnite players may make their way over to Marvel Rivals. Even if there isn’t an exodus from the battle royale, there is still something to be said about Fortnite losing its exclusiveness. When it comes to a world focused on online combat, Fortnite was one of the few places Marvel fans could play their favorite characters in such a setting. After that’s gone, Fortnite will likely have to bring out the big guns in order to keep hardcore Marvel lovers engaged.

Fortnite and Marvel Rivals Reveling in Some Healthy Competition

Going Head-to-Head Over the Marvel Roster

Since both games are able to pull from Marvel’s extensive list of characters, it will be fascinating to see how this inspires both games moving forward. If the two titles happen to release the same character at the same time, there will likely be some interesting competition found in their adaptations. From the design to gameplay, comparing how these games go about bringing certain characters to life in unique ways is an exciting prospect.

Once Marvel Rivals officially arrives on the scene, Fortnite will likely have its first real challenge when it comes to Marvel features. With the two titles being free-to-play offerings that put Marvel characters into an online atmosphere, Marvel Rivals and Fortnite could prove to be an unlikely pairing for competition.
