One Minecraft Item Makes a Clear Case for a Sky Island Biome

There’s one idea for a Minecraft biome that many fans have, in one way or another, expressed a desire to see in the game’s vanilla form. Be it through popular game modes, fan mods, or other survival games, it’s likely that some Minecraft players would be partial to a sky island biome.

Mojang has been doing things differently recently, changing how Minecraft is developed through 2024. The turn towards multiple small updates per year is a great opportunity for the studio to try new things, including the creation of more niche, experimental ideas. The recent addition of the Pale Garden and the Creaking mob were good examples of this, showing how Mojang is creating small updates that focus on individual mobs, biomes, and more—on creating wholly new ideas.

The Elytra Is A Great Case For Sky Islands In Minecraft, Especially With Recent Changes

With this in mind, sky islands would be a very promising project for Mojang to pursue under this new update system—and there’s already an item perfect for the job. Minecraft‘s Elytra is already a beloved tool, and adding a fleshed-out sky islands biome would make it more than a transport aid. It could become a key to a whole new dimension of Minecraft, perhaps even in a literal sense.

Minecraft Players Love Floating Islands

It’s interesting to see how much players love islands in the sky. Whenever a mountain generates in an odd way, causing a little chunk of it to be suspended in the air, most players just have to stop and inspect the situation—and the area will likely become the foundation for a brand-new base. This idea is also at the heart of many popular Minecraft minigames, particularly Skyblock, and the incredibly popular Minecraft Aether mod. Players are predisposed to seeking out the secrets of the sky, even if there’s little to find without the base of a tall mountain.

However, the expansion of Minecraft‘s build height limit to 319 blocks, as of 1.18, has made the sky even more vast. Therefore, the lack of anything up that high, that players could stumble into while reaching towards that ceaseless void, gives the impression of something missing. Terraria‘s smaller worlds have floating islands, and they’re incredibly popular with fans—which has led to a crossover in demand. Indeed, it would make sense for something more lucrative to be hiding there in the clouds, and it would give players opportunities to use their Elytra for a whole new purpose.

Floating Islands Would Make The Elytra More Interesting

Adding a serious floating island biome, one that offers exploration and adventure high in the sky, would not only benefit from Minecraft‘s Elytra, but would be a benefit to Minecraft‘s Elytra. The clearest sense in which this manifests is, naturally, exploration itself. An Elytra would be by far the best way to explore sky islands, and it would give players a chance to relive the moment they first found one in an End Ship and glided out over a void sea of islands.

Moreover, sky islands could also make Elytra travel more interesting and more challenging. Many players have complained that the Elytra outclasses other forms of Minecraft transport too easily. While the issue is subject to debate, and there’s no easy answer, some aerial obstacles would make using an Elytra less of a walk in the park. Furthermore, it would make using the item an experience more similar to typical Minecraft exploration; those flying with an Elytra may be too high to see detours on the ground below, but a detour biome in the sky would really enhance its use for exploration.
