One Classic Mortal Kombat Mode Needs to Make a Comeback Now More Than Ever
The time may be approaching for one game mode from Mortal Kombat‘s past to make its return for the series’ new generation. In rebooting the series’ timeline, Mortal Kombat 1 has taken fighters from various points in the series’ past to start the storyline anew. With that approach in mind, Mortal Kombat could pull more elements from the past aside from its fighters. Mortal Kombat 1 already has plenty of content, from its story mode, to the towers, to the ongoing Invasions seasons. However, there is one other mode from Mortal Kombat‘s history that might be worth another look.
In the wake of Mortal Kombat 1‘s Khaos Reigns expansion, the new era has grown significantly larger. The roster will have expanded by 12 characters in total after the rollout of the latest guest characters, and the reintroduction of Animalities has provided players with an additional way to stylishly end a fight. There’s still a good chance that Mortal Kombat 1 will have at least one more content-rich update in the future, considering recent trends for the series. Past Mortal Kombat games have plenty of elements worthy of returning, and even if they don’t make it into Mortal Kombat 1, the next game could oblige.

Mortal Kombat’s Konquest Mode Could Have a Chance to Finally Return
Konquest Mode Offered Single-Player Adventures in Past Mortal Kombat Games
Having appeared three times so far, Mortal Kombat‘s Konquest Mode has taken multiple forms throughout its history. In its debut in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, it was something of a trial mode that trained players on how to use each playable character. Mortal Kombat Deception and Mortal Kombat Armageddon‘s Konquest modes were instead single-player adventures starring new characters Shujinko and Taven respectively. This shift resulted in a sort of predecessor for the story modes in more recent Mortal Kombat games. It has been 18 years since Konquest mode appeared in a Mortal Kombat game, but it could have a way to return.
Ed Boon Hinted at the Possibility of Konquest Mode’s Return
One possible hint at the concept came when Ed Boon asked fans about Konquest Mode after posting an article discussing its previous appearances. It’s far from the first time that Boon has hinted at possible future plans for the series. The fact that Ed Boon brought up Konquest Mode at all shows that it hasn’t been completely forgotten about. Of course, it’s not a confirmation that a new version of the mode is in the works — an online post is not the same thing as actual news — but it does bring up the question of what a new Konquest Mode could look like.
Konquest Mode Can Still Work in Modern Mortal Kombat
If it does rear its head, Konquest Mode would likely return as a single-player adventure once more. While Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Shujinko and one-off fighter Taven were the protagonists in the past, who would head the mode this time is up in the air. The developers could once again introduce a new character to take the reins of the story. If the game takes place after a time skip, the new version of Hanzo Hisashi would also be a valid option. There’s also the possibility that players could use any character, but if so, Konquest mode would need a story that would make that make sense.

Mortal Kombat‘s Konquest Mode has been gone for a long time, and it would be good to see it return. The story of Mortal Kombat 2 will have a lot of threads to follow up on. Whether Konquest Mode could run alongside that or as its own entity entirely remains to be seen. However, Mortal Kombat 1‘s Invasions Mode has shown that RPG-themed adventures do still have a place in Mortal Kombat. Either in Mortal Kombat 1 or the next game, Konquest Mode may be something to look out for.
