In the depths of space in No Man’s Sky, you can encounter many things, including ships that weren’t as lucky in their adventures as you. Derelict freighters are abandoned capital ships that you can explore in a replayable mission to collect valuable loot and hear the stories of what exactly happened to the ship in question.

This guide will teach you how to find derelict freighters in No Man’s Sky — and what to expect when exploring them.

While you can encounter abandoned freighters as a random event when traveling through space, these aren’t boardable and only have a few cargo pods to loot. To find a derelict freighter that you can board and explore, you need an Emergency Signal Scanner.

You can get the Emergency Signal Scanner from the following vendors:

  • Iteration: Helios on the Anomaly – Offers one free Emergency Signal Scanner every week.
  • Scrap Dealer on a space station – Sells an Emergency Signal Scanner for five million Units. Consecutive purchases get more expensive.

Once you have an Emergency Signal Scanner, head to open space and use it from your inventory. Activate the Pulse Drive to start scouring the space for an abandoned freighter. When the scanner finds the freighter, exit Pulse Drive to see the ship and start a Lost in Space mission.

Having cold-resistance upgrades for your exosuit can make a big difference while navigating a Derelict Freighter. Not required, but very helpful.

How To Clear Derelict Freighters In No Man’s Sky

In order to clear derelict freighters in No Man’s Sky, you’ll want to fully explore the randomly arranged rooms, collecting ship logs, and looting everything you can find! But first: landing.

The freighters can vary in size and type, but they all have a landing pad for you to use. Look for a landing pad close to the bridge of the ship — it has the same blue circle indicating a spot to land as any other landing pad in the game. Exit the ship and look for the entrance to the freighter.

The game doesn’t save when you’re on a derelict freighter. If you decide to close the game during exploration, the freighter and your Emergency Signal Scanner will disappear.

Inside the derelict freighter, you must clear the rooms and defeat enemies (if there are any). As you go through the rooms, use your Scanner to locate loot and your Analysis Visor to locate interactable objects, like explosive canisters and doors.

Collect Ship Logs

Throughout the exploration, you will also find ship logs that tell the story of the ship’s crew. The mission has side objectives for you to recover the Crew Manifest and Captain’s Log and salvage the Engineering Unit.

Here are all the objectives and how to complete them:

  • Crew Manifest: Find the Records Terminal (green terminal) and interact with it
  • Captain’s Log: Drops from the Security Mainframe (orange terminal). Interact with it, choose any captain’s fate, and then use security credentials to collect the log. Security Credentials drop randomly from logs around the freighter.
  • Engineering Unit: Find the Engineering Control (red terminal). Interact with it and choose the reward you want. The rewards include Salvaged Fleet Unit (Technology Upgrade), Cargo Bulkhead (Freighter Bulkhead), or Nanites.

The terminals usually appear in that order when clearing the rooms, but you can do them in any order you want. Every terminal also has a teleporter next to it that you can use to teleport to the previous terminal and the emergency airlock where you entered the ship.

Rewards For Completing Derelict Freighters In No Man’s Sky

The Derelict Freighters hold lots of valuables, but the main rewards from the mission are Tainted Metal, Crew’s Manifest, Captain’s Log, and whatever you choose from the Engineering Control. After leaving the freighter, head to the nearest Space Station where you can sell the Crew’s Manifest and the Captain’s Log to the Scrap Dealer for Tainted Metal — or donate them to the Guild Envoy for reputation.

Tainted Metal is a currency you can spend at the Scrap Dealer. The Scrap Dealer offers cosmetic rewards, base decorations, and three types of Suspicious Packets. Suspicious Packet (Tech) and Suspicious Packet (Arms) hold black-market upgrades for your exosuit and Multi-Tool, respectively. However, these upgrades often have terrible stats that aren’t worth the price.

If you want more illegal upgrades, you can wait until you encounter a landed pilot on a planet who sells them for Nanites — or you’ll need to seek out a Pirate-controlled system directly.
