Players will encounter numerous Shanhai 9000s as they explore New Kunlun in Nine Sols. These robots are in possession of map data chips, and fans can either pay 400 Jin for a copy or forcibly remove the chip at no cost. For those players who are trying to determine how they should approach that choice, this guide details the consequences associated with forcibly removing chips in Nine Sols.

This guide does not contain any story spoilers, but it does list the names of two of the game’s achievements. For those readers who would prefer not to see those names, it may be enough to say that forcibly removing chips in
Nine Sols
only has achievement-related consequences.

Nine Sols: Should You Forcibly Remove the Chip?

While the choice between paying for map chip copies and forcibly removing them does not have a significant impact on the game’s story, it does affect the achievements that players can obtain. More specifically, Metroidvania fans who forcibly remove a chip will immediately earn the You bastard… achievement, but they will be unable to earn the Repurposed achievement. Indeed, players can only earn Repurposed if they pay for copies of every map data chip and do not forcibly remove any of them.

This means that it is not possible to earn every achievement in Nine Sols during a single playthrough, as it is, of course, impossible to both forcibly remove a chip for the You Bastard… achievement and to not forcibly remove any chips for the Repurposed achievement. Fortunately for achievement hunters, it is possible to pursue both options without completing two full playthroughs, and here is one way in which that can be done:

  • Pay for copies of every map data chip during a first playthrough, and earn the Repurposed achievement.
  • Start a second playthrough, and forcibly remove the chip from the Shanhai 9000 that is near Nine Sols‘ first boss. This action will award the You Bastard… achievement, and players should be able to reach the robot in less than two hours.

Alternatively, Soulslike fans on their first playthroughs could advance until they reach the Shanhai 9000 that is near the Radiant Pagoda, forcibly remove its map data chip for the You Bastard… achievement, and then restart the game with the intention of paying for every chip. While this approach may be less enticing than the one that was outlined previously, as it requires back-to-back playthroughs of the game’s opening hours, it is worth considering nonetheless.
