While the Vault Hunters have already been ranked on which ones are the best, some of the characters that didn’t make the cut by how impressive they are, still deserve a placement somewhere as being the most iconic Vault Hunters in the Borderlands franchise. These Vault Hunters are some of the most well-known, either from moments in the games or simply because they are fan favorites, ranked on how iconic they are.

  • First appeared in Borderlands.
  • A Vault Hunter that only loves his bird more than cash.
  • An incredible sharpshooter that seems like he never misses.

Starting off strong, Mordecai is arguably one of the most iconic Vault Hunters in the Borderlands franchise, not only for his impressive sniper skills but also for his close affiliation with birds. He and Bloodwing are nearly inseparable in Borderlands 2 and players likely fell in love with both of them while playing the game.

However, Mordecai also becomes one of the most iconic due to his reaction to his beautiful bird having to be killed after it’s turned into something monstrous by Handsome Jack. Thankfully, Mordecai is able to get one of Bloodwing’s hatchlings, which he swears to look after to the point that he even quits drinking.

Athena

One of The Greatest Storytellers In The Franchise

  • First appeared in Borderlands.
  • She was originally the top operative of the Crimson Lance.
  • One of the few remaining Vault Hunters from Borderlands: The Pre-sequel to still be alive.

Although the Vault Hunter, Athena, first makes her appearance in the original Borderlands game for those that have played DLC, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, many players are more likely to remember this shield-wielding Vault Hunter due to her being a playable character in Borderlands: The Pre-sequel.

In this game, she is not only one of the playable Vault Hunters but is also the main narrator of the game as she tells the original story of them finding a Vault for Handsome Jack before she is killed by Lilith. Players were able to get to know this iconic hunter further in Tales of the Borderlands, where players also get to see the sweet love story between her and Janey.

  • A highly skilled assassin.
  • Although Zer0 is a mystery, he is well-loved by players.

Some of the most mysterious characters are also some of the most iconic in the Borderlands franchise. Zer0 has not only appeared as a playable Vault Hunter in Borderlands 2 but has also made his debut in the Tales of the Borderlands games too, where he is shown to be just as incredible.

Players were also happy to see this well-known enigma of a character once more in Borderlands 3, with hopes of seeing him again in the next Borderlands title. Nothing much is truly known about this character, but his quirky helmet screen that displays his emotion, as well as his interesting way of speaking in haiku, has solidified Zer0 as one of the most iconic Vault Hunters of the franchise.

5

Krieg

Some Psychos Are More Memorable Than Others

  • First appeared in Borderlands 2.
  • A Psycho with some sort of conscience.
  • Iconic for his chaotic lines and peculiar humor.

Borderlands 2 already had several Vault Hunters for the player to choose from, though, through DLCs, Krieg was revealed to be the sixth playable character to be introduced to the Borderlands, as players for the first time could be one of the foulmouthed Psychos that a player would usually end up killing instead of playing.

Even Krieg’s intro trailer showed that, behind his peculiar catchphrases, he is a well-thinking man. Players only truly remember Krieg for his violent rampages and weird lines, but that doesn’t stop Krieg from being one of the most iconic Vault Hunters in the franchise, as he still manages to do his job, and not kill the other Vault Hunters.

4

Maya

One Of The Most Loved Sirens In Borderlands

  • First appeared in Borderlands 2.
  • A Vault Hunter with lethal Siren abilities.
  • She made an impressive teacher to Ava.

With almost every official Borderlands game having a Siren class Vault Hunter for the players to play as, Maya is by far one of the most iconic options, not only as a controllable character in Borderlands 2 but also as an NPC character in Borderlands 3.

Sirens have always been some of the most well-known characters in Borderlands, especially due to their creation and the powers they possess. Maya is no different, although this blue-haired woman is shown to be one of the strongest, in Borderlands 3, she took on an apprentice – Ava – that she has been teaching in the Siren ways, so that she could have her powers once she had died, something that happened a lot sooner than the players had expected.

3

Roland

Well Known Soldier And Leader Of The Crimson Raiders

  • First appeared in Borderlands.
  • The original leader of the Crimson Raiders.
  • Well-known even after Borderlands 2.

Mordecai isn’t the only iconic Vault Hunter from the original Borderlands game that has been well-remembered and also well-loved by players, as Roland, the soldier, is another Vault Hunter that has continued to have a presence in the series, as well as being incredibly missed by the players.

Although, in the games, Roland is quite a basic character to play, Borderlands 2 saw a new side to Roland as the player got involved in quests not only with Roland but also with the Crimson Raiders, a group that protected the townsfolk of Sanctuary. Roland wasn’t only a memorable character for the players, as Tiny Tina is shown to be incredibly attached to Roland as, even after his death, she continues to include him in her dungeons and dragons-like game that is seen in the Borderlands 2 DLC, Assault of Dragon Keep.

2

Handsome Jack

The Most Remembered Villain Of The Series

  • First appeared in Borderlands 2.
  • One of the greatest antagonists in the Borderlands franchise.
  • He has some of the most well-known and funniest lines.

Above all else, Handsome Jack is and always will be a Vault Hunter. Even after the events of Borderlands 2, many players still mourn that Handsome Jack will no longer be the antagonist of the games, with this silver-tongued Hyperion leader being unfortunately dead.

He is known to be so iconic due to how witty he is, with Jack constantly contacting the Vault Hunters of Borderlands 2 by flaunting his wealth, talking about the most random of things, but most of all because of how brutal he is. However, players still can’t seem to stop loving him, even after all this.

1

Lilith

A Staple Of The Franchise And A Savior

  • First appeared in Borderlands.
  • Leader of a group of Bandits and the Crimson Raiders.
  • Strong even without her Siren powers.

Unsurprisingly, the most iconic Vault Hunter in the Borderlands series is also arguably one of the best Vault Hunters in the franchise. Lilith has been one of the most memorable Sirens as well as a general character in this looter shooter, with the Firehawk having a crucial role in both Borderlands 2 and 3.

Not only does she take over as the leader of the Crimson Raiders after certain events in Borderlands 2, but she is also shown to be a savior by the end of Borderlands 3, not to mention the joy many players have had while interacting with Lilith in these other titles. Lilith has also proven to be one of the most iconic as, even without her Siren powers, she was still unstoppable, showing how much she has grown since being one of the original playable Vault Hunters in Borderlands.
