How to Get the Hammer in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
While exploring Rumbla Island in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, gamers will come across several objects that will most likely catch their attention, such as switches, cracked rocks, and crates. However, at that point in the game, they won’t be able to do anything about it. To interact with these objects, players must find an appropriate tool, and in this case that’s the Hammer, a frequent item in Super Mario RPGs.

This guide will help players find the Hammer in Mario & Luigi: Brothership so they can get past these obstacles and reach previously unreachable areas in the game.
How to Get the Hammer in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Once players have connected Rumbla Island to the Uni-Tree, a container will appear at Shipshape Island, and there will be someone stuck inside. It’s at this point in the story that gamers will be able to get their hands on the Hammer.
Willma’s children are stuck on two different islands. Gamers must bring them back to their mother, but they must choose whether they want to rescue Billdit or Maykit first. Billdit was last seen at Raynforst, and Maykit had gone to Twisten Sprout.
Regardless of the path that players pick first, they will obtain the Hammer once they reconnect either Raynforst or Twisten Sprout.
How to Use the Hammer in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Mario and Luigi will equip the Hammer as soon as they’ve obtained it, which means gamers can start smashing things left and right immediately. Similarly to jumping, Mario and Luigi each have their own buttons for the Hammer. If players want to use the Hammer as Mario, they have to press X; to use it as Luigi, they must press Y instead. The Hammer is useful in several instances, such as:
- Breaking crates and cracked rocks
- Activating switches
- Smacking enemies in combat
Here is how to use the Hammer in all of these situations:
How to Break Crates and Rocks in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Gamers will come across hundreds of crates and cracked rocks in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. They can break rocks and crates as Mario by using the Hammer (X) while facing the object or by using the Hammer (Y) or Luigi Logic (L) as Luigi.
How to Activate Switches in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Players will see various green L switch and red M switches during their playthrough of Mario & Luigi: Brothership, and they can activate them once they unlock the Hammer.
To activate a Luigi switch, gamers must use Luigi Logic (L) or press the Y button while near it. To activate a Mario switch, they simple have to press the X button while looking at it.
How to Smack Enemies with a Hammer in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Players can smack enemies in battle by selecting the Hammer box. Additionally, instead of jumping on an enemy to get ahead start in battle, they can also whip out their Hammer and hit them. However, its slightly slower so it’s a riskier move. Here is a video demonstrating how to perfectly perform the Hammer attack whether gamers are starting as Mario or Luigi:
To deal the most damage with a Hammer attack in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, players must wait to Mario or Luigi to prepare their swing before hitting the command button. The command prompt can be confusing because it appears like the A and B button are meant to be held down to charge up the attack, but that is not the case. Overall, the Hammer attack can be tricky to understand the first couple of times but gamers should get the hang of it pretty quickly.
The Hammer is particularly useful for attacking enemies that are protecting their heads or when a Jump attack is uneffective.
