God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man Are in a Similar Boat
In the world of PlayStation exclusives, God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man have been two powerhouse franchises for the company to have on its roster. Between these two popular PlayStation properties, the diversity of the action-adventure genre is on full display, as these series are wildly different in most aspects of their gameplay. However, their knack for strong storytelling continues the PlayStation tradition of strong single-player narratives.
There is another connecting factor between this pair of franchises, though, that leaves God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man in surprisingly similar situations. Based on past leaks and rumors, God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man reportedly have significant spin-offs on the way, but any news regarding these games has yet to be confirmed. An Atreus-led God of War game and a Marvel’s Spider-Man spin-off starring Venom in the driver’s seat have been hot topics within the rumor mill, but such claims remain unaddressed by their respective developers.

God of War Could Be Passing the Torch
At the end of God of War Ragnarok, Kratos and his son Atreus part ways in a bittersweet and emotional finale that makes it clear that the latter is off to do his own solo exploration. Santa Monica Studio has yet to say whether reports of an Atreus spin-off are true or not, and the lack of outright denial may lead some to believe that the leaks and rumors hold weight. However, it’s important to remember that all leaked claims are merely hearsay until it is officially confirmed.
Venom is One of Many Notorious Insomniac Leaks
The end of 2023 was a rocky time for developer Insomniac, as the company was hit by a massive ransomware attack that leaked copious amounts of data. From gameplay details about the in-development Marvel’s Wolverine to a potential release roadmap, the Insomniac leaks ended the year on a controversial note. One of the leaks in question was evidence of a Venom game potentially titled Venom: Lethal Protector. Just like Santa Monica Studio, Insomniac has remained incredibly tight-lipped about these reports. Even more surprising is that the leaks pointed to a potential 2025 release date. With the year now in its early stages and no official word or reveal from Insomniac, the state of the Venom game isn’t looking promising.
Venom: Lethal Protector takes its title from the six-issue Marvel Comics limited series of the same name from 1993.
The Wait For Rumors to Be Addressed Continues
As it stands, it looks like Santa Monica Studio and Insomniac are going to keep as quiet as possible about the rumors and leaks until the two companies are ready, if ever. The future of Marvel’s Spider-Man is a huge mystery in general, so it will be interesting to see if a potential Venom-focused project ever actually comes to fruition.
On the God of War front, there is the potential for something to be announced quite soon. The franchise is slowly closing in on its 20th anniversary, and that sets the stage for a potential reveal. If an Atreus spin-off is actually on the table, then God of War‘s 20th anniversary would be the perfect way to introduce such a project.
- God of War’s 20th anniversary is March 22.
- Ragnarök recently launched on PS Plus, possibly to ignite excitement leading up to the anniversary.
Theories have speculated that an Atreus-led game would follow his journey to find surviving Giants.
Santa Monica Studio and Insomniac Are Sitting on a Powder Keg
With an already packed 2025, Santa Monica Studio and Insomniac finally confirming these rumored spin-offs this year would be massive. As rumors about these Sony exclusives continue, it will be exciting to see if either studio lifts the veil on any upcoming projects as the year progresses.
