Key Takeaways
Table of Contents
- Each companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard has a unique playstyle that complements specific specializations.
- Players should choose companions based on their own character choices for a balanced and effective party.
- Taash, Davrin, Neve, Bellara, Emmrich, Lucanis, and Harding all offer diverse abilities for strategic combat synergies.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard gives players three types of classes, each with their own specializations. The game also has seven companions that can join players on their journey. Each of these characters has their own playstyle that is reminiscent of these specializations.
New players should read up on some of the important elements of the game to gain a firm grasp of which companions will compliment the choices they have made. This will result in a well-oiled party that can overcome whatever the game throws their way. All the game’s companions are good, but here’s how they rank against each other.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – All Difficulty Setting Differences
Dragon Age: The Veilguard gives players the option of choosing among five different difficulty settings. Here is everything players need to know about
7 Taash
Fire Warrior
- Qunari Warrior
- High focus on fire
There are many different damage types in the game, such as Cold, Electricity, and Fire. Players that want to increase their Fire damage will want Taash in the mix. Taash is very brutish, like the typical barbarian-style character, but they have a much deeper layer of personality for players that want explore their relationship with the character.
Taash is not a bad companion, but they don’t bring as oomf as the others. Players that are a Champion Specialization will have little to no need for another warrior, and Mages and Rogues will fare much better with Darvin acting as their frontliner.
6 Davrin
Tanky Warrior
- Elven Warrior
- Has a pet griffin
Davrin is a stalwart and stern individual, as well as being a member of the Grey Wardens. He brings a lot of warrior flair to the game, and is perfect for players that want a frontliner while they play either a midrange or glassy option. He can attract the aggro of enemies and can take quite a beating as well.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – How To Sell Items
Valuable Items can be obtained through many ways while exploring Thedas but can only be sold one way in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
At his side is Assan, his pet Griffin. Assan is not just for aesthetic flair alongside Darvin’s character, and is incorporated into how he can play in combat. Assan gets his name from the Elven word for Arrow. Heroic Strike can apply Overwhelmed for party members to detonate, while Death from Above will detonate any applied Weakened states.
5 Neve
Ice Mage
- Human Mage
- High focus on Cold damage
Neve has a strong sense of right and wrong, fighting against injustice to the point she would make just as great a paladin as she does a Mage. She provides a lot of Cold damage focus, and players who want or need more of this damage type will want Neve as their party’s Mage.
Neve is a ranged mage, meaning she will synergize well with Warriors who are up close and personal. However, she doesn’t synergize as well as the other two mage options. This is due to her applying Weakened and detonating Sundered, instead of the other way around.
4 Bellara
Controller Mage
- Elven Mage
- Fascinated by magic
It’s easy to see that Bellara will be a lot of players’ favorite character, despite how she synergizes. She is a creative and intelligent individual who has a thirst for knowledge and a deep curiosity for ancient artifacts. She is also an interesting and delightful character to interact with that can bring a lot of enjoyment to players throughout the game.
Like Neve, Bellara does well with a frontliner soaking up the aggro. Players that apply Sundered as a Warrior can have Ballara detonate it; players can also have her apply Weakened for another party member to detonate. She also provides a lot of Electricity damage synergy.
3 Emmrich
Summoner Mage
Emmrich has a lot of flair and personality, while also being a well-versed intellectual. Players will meet him at the Grand Necropolis through Bellara. He is capable of summoning minions that can deal damage and help players keep their distance from enemies. He can apply and detonate the same states as Bellara, meaning players can use him as an alternative if they so wish.
Emmrich is a great option for a player using a Rogue, but players will definitely want their other party member to be as tanky as possible. This spreads out damage against the party and increases survivability as a whole. If things go south, Emmrich is also a great support option that can offer healing. Players looking to build around Stagger will want to experiment with having Emmrich in their party.
2 Lucanis
Melee Rogue
- Human Rogue
- Master Assassin
Both top picks for this list are among the Rogue class, with the first being the more melee focused of the two. Lucanis is the epitome of a dashing rogue and champion of the people, and he has a big heart despite being an Assassin.
Players who want this companion in their party will want to heavily explore single target damage as opposed to area-of-effect. This will allow them to drop enemies at an alarming rate and reduce the overall damage that can be done to the party in a fight. Lucanis is a great choice both early on and late into the game.
1 Harding
DPS Rogue
- Dwarf Rogue
- Ranged Specialist
No matter the party composition, having Harding in the group greatly ups its damage. She has a very trustworthy presence, and is someone her allies can always rely on. She is also a returning character from previous Dragon Age games.
Not only can Harding rain down plenty of damage, but she is also perfect for being the group’s support and providing crowd control. She is perfect for Warriors, Mages and even other Rogues to bring along to just make everything go smoother. If players have Bellara or Emmrich in their party, they can apply Sundered for Harding to detonate. This makes her a clear pick to have by Rook’s side over others.
