  • Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto hopes to make more classic fighting titles available on modern hardware in the future.
  • Recent releases, like Marvel vs. Capcom: Arcade Classics, have been successful in reviving old favorites.
  • Capcom Fighting Collection 2 will be released on May 16.

Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto hopes to bring more of the publisher’s classic fighting games to modern consoles following the upcoming Capcom Fighting Collection 2. From Street Fighter and Darkstalkers to the Marvel Vs. Capcom series, Capcom has been home to some of the most well-regarded 2D fighting franchises of all time. However, many classic Capcom fighters have been left out of print for some time, much to the disappointment of nostalgic gamers who sharpened their skills on these old titles in the arcade and at home.

Capcom has been making efforts to change this in recent years by releasing modern collections of its greatest and most well-remembered fighting games. It started with 2022’s Capcom Fighting Collection, which brought ten classic games, including all five Darkstalkers entries, to the PS4 and Xbox One. Then came Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, which finally allowed fans to replay every entry in the legendary Marvel vs. Capcom series with new online multiplayer features. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 will be released on May 16 and includes the Capcom-developed SNK vs. Capcom games along with classic 3D brawlers like Powerstone.

This might not be the last updated Capcom fighting game collection, either, if Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto gets his wish granted. While speaking to Japanese publication Inside Games (via VCG), Matsumoto expressed a desire to rerelease even more classic Capcom games, stating that there are still many older fighting games that can’t be played on modern systems.

These modern systems include Xbox consoles, which almost didn’t get last year’s Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics until Capcom quietly released it on Xbox One earlier this month. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 will be available on Xbox One from the start, following “technical discussions” between Capcom and Xbox parent company Microsoft.

Many of Capcom’s classic 2D fighters and 3D brawlers will finally be made playable on modern consoles when Capcom Fighting Collection 2 launches in May, but there are still plenty of titles in Capcom’s long catalog that are still locked out of the current generation of gaming. This includes 1999’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Heritage of the Future and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, which admittedly might run into some licensing issues if Capcom should want to rerelease them. Nonetheless, Shuhei Matsumoto hopes to let modern gamers experience even more of Capcom’s classic fighting games, which run the gamut from cult favorites to some of the most iconic franchises in the genre.
