Crossplay, that is, being able to play with people who are on different consoles and systems, is a relatively new concept within the world of gaming. Though fighting and survival games are examples of genres that have begun incorporating this leap in technology, it’s the FPS games that have been embracing it the most, considering the sheer number of people who play these sorts of titles across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and even Switch.

The Hardest FPS Games Ever Made, Ranked

First-person shooters are a tough genre to get into if someone has never played them before. Some get so hard that they are nearly impossible.

While being able to actually use crossplay is all well and good, it can’t simply be thrown in randomly. Being able to give console players a fair fight against PC mouse users, for example, is just one of many precautions that need to be considered when making a game cross-compatible. With that being said, there have still been plenty of FPS games where crossplay has successfully enhanced the online experience. Without any further ado, it’s time to rank these games based on their overall enjoyment, but also on how well they have managed to implement crossplay,

The Finals is a free to play objective-based multiplayer game that seemingly came out of nowhere when it released in 2023. A big part of the appeal, aside from the vibrant aesthetic and satisfying gunplay, is how players are able to destroy virtually every part of a map with their weapons, allowing them to construct an entirely new environment as part of the chaos.

Crossplay allows players from Xbox, PlayStation, and PC to team up or go against with one another, though admittedly, it can sometimes feel a little one-sided when playing on a console and facing off against mouse and keyboard players. However, since The Finals doesn’t require top-notch accuracy, and is more based around the unpredictable chaos of a match, it’s still well worth trying out with a few buddies.

Despite the Overwatch IP being around for almost an entire decade, it continues to receive constant updates from Blizzard, and while this usually includes new skins and heroes, in 2021, crossplay was an extra addition that was added into the game. Players can use their Battle.Net usernames to link up and join a lobby together, and while that includes players from PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, it even applies to those on the Switch too.

There is a small caveat to this though. Crossplay can only be activated for Quick Match, meaning Competitive will only be filled with players who are on the same system, in order to try and keep the game as balanced and fair as possible. Despite that, Overwatch 2’s core gameplay is still a ton of fun to jump into, making it ideal for quick action-packed sessions with a few buddies through crossplay.

Crossplay has been a little bit of a double-edged sword for Black Ops 6, though the benefits still outweigh the drawbacks. Considering the speed and accuracy some PC players can have when using a mouse, alongside the occasional sign of a cheater, crossplay can be an unpredictable gamble for console players. At the same time, because of Call of Duty’s enormous playerbase, it means matches are usually found in no more than a few seconds, which can be hard to come by with most games that include crossplay.

These first-person shooters include some elements of the survival genre to keep players on their toes and keep the tension high at all times.

What’s more, the game’s Zombies mode also supports crossplay, allowing players across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC to team up against the mindless hordes to grab a new high score. Finding matches has always been a drawback of this fun bonus mode, but Black Ops 6 has managed to resolve the issue, with it now being more popular than ever.

Anyone looking for a game that’s a little more casual and doesn’t require twitch-reflexes and a competitive edge, and can still play with others across systems, will definitely want to give Borderlands 3 a shot. The core gameplay loop of blasting through swarms of enemies with a wild assortment of weapons that all have their own unique bullets and effects makes fo a thrilling thrillride that’s hard to put down.

Since Borderlands 3 is a PVE game, it also means players can play through the game at their own pace, giving everyone a chance to converse without needing to be laser-focused at all times. It would have been nice to see a few extra co-op game modes added in to spice up the variety, but the campaign of Borderlands 3 is still long enough to keep players engaged for hours on end.

When battle royales began dominating the competitive space, Apex Legends decided to take bits and pieces of that formula, while also putting its own unique spin on it. Though Apex plays similarly to a battle royale, with a large number of players duking it out for survival in an open space, it also features heroes with unique abilities, and teammates.

Needless to say, this frantic and chaotic FPS can get pretty competitive, but thankfully, Respawn have implemented a pretty unique crossplay matchmaking system into the game. If players are in a party of either consoles or PCs, the game will try to match them up with the same platform. However, if a console player is in a party of PC users, then they’ll be directed towards the PC playerbase. This is a small but handy way to keep the gameplay fair, without imposing full-on restrictions.

Valorant has made its mark on the FPS genre, with players quickly realizing after its release just how unique and addictive the gameplay truly is. The fast-paced nature of each match makes Valorant feel like Counter Strike: Global Offensive if hero shooter powers and abilities were thrown into the mix. This unique concept has earned the game a massive playerbase, and while crossplay is technically available to unite fans, it only applies to the consoles.

Xbox and PlayStation players can hop into a match by simply exchanging usernames, but PC players will have to fight among themselves. Though this can seem a little restrictive, on the other hand, it’s promoted Valorant as one of the go-to competitive shooters for console players who want to take on the ranked modes on an equal footing.

Bungie struck gold when they released the ambitious MMO looter shooter known as Destiny, but much to the surprise of pretty much everyone, they doubled down and cooked up something even greater with the sequel. Destiny 2, especially now all the expansions have been released, features a ton of content, including nine lengthy Raids which players can try to take on as a team, no matter whether they’re playing on console or PC.

All non-competitive modes allow for crossplay between all platforms, but if players want to go head-to-head with other teams, they’ll be restricted to either the console or PC pool. Still, considering the sheer amount of co-op missions and challenges players can venture through in the PVE sections of the game, this doesn’t feel like a massive drawback.

While crossplay is already still seen as a relatively fresh idea within the gaming space, XDefiant takes it a step further by also allowing players to adjust the input method. This grants the option to only play against those using the same controller method, which essentially negates the whole controller vs keyboard imbalance altogether.

That’s not even mentioning the smooth and satisfying gameplay itself, which borrows from Call of Duty while also leaning more heavily into the arcade aspect of an FPS. While still early on in its life cycle, XDefiant is picking up a lot of steam, so being able to jump on with literally anyone, and to be able to meet them on an even playing field with input method, makes it a must-try for fans of the genre.
