The Greatest Comedy Anime Of All Time
Table of Contents
When someone needs a good laugh, anime has them covered. Here are the funniest comedy anime of all time.
Body swapping has appeared in all kinds of anime whether it be high fantasy or modern-day, but usually only as a short escapade that doesn’t last long. However, a few shows focus entirely on the concept itself; consequently, here are the best body swap anime.
To be considered, both characters must be from the same world. Therefore, no reincarnation or isekai anime where the protagonist takes over someone’s body. Also, episodes/arcs that contain a body swap will be considered.
Updated on January 4, 2025 by Mark Sammut: Winter 2025 has just started, and the season does not have any obvious body swap stories. That said, 100 Girlfriends should be adapting a chapter that includes this scenario, so there should be something that fits the descriptor. In the meantime, fans can check out a few older anime or sagas that incorporate this element, including two new additions to this article. Click below to jump to these entries.

Shin-Ei Animation
Atashin’chi is a long-running manga and anime series that features the episodic slice-of-life adventures of the Tachibana family. The protagonist of the series is 17-year-old Mikan, though her mother, father, and her younger brother Yuzuhiko are just as central to the series.
Atashin’chi itself does not have anything to do with body-swapping, but the movie released in 2003 is a different story. The movie has Mikan and her mother swap bodies when they are struck by lightning, forcing the two of them to live each other’s lives while the other family members find a way to switch them back. The movie is a classic body swap story that any fan of the trope should appreciate.

The Legendary Hero Is Dead!
Mixed Bag Comedy With A Polarizing Protagonist Who Swaps With A Corpse
Touka Scott is a farmer who has a fetish for thighs and stockings and a penchant for setting up traps. When one of his traps accidentally ends up killing Sion, the legendary Hero, Touka finds himself inside the Hero’s decaying body. If Touka ever wants to return to his original body, he’ll have to finish Sion’s job and seal up the Gates of Hell.
The Legendary Hero Is Dead! puts a fantasy spin on the classic body swap story with a little bit of dark humor to go along with it. The Spring 2023 anime is quite polarizing, primarily thanks to its protagonist. Touka’s antics and perversions make him fairly difficult to like, and the humor is hit-and-miss.

Dragon Ball Z transcends anime. Arguably the biggest shonen adaptation on an international scale, DBZ offers more than 200 episodes of timeless action and even some pretty funny humor. While the main arcs (Frieza, Cell, and Buu) tend to hog the limelight, the smaller sagas that lead up to these encounters are also fantastic and creative. For example, the Captain Ginyu Saga serves as the perfect set-up for the Z-Fighters’ ultimate battle with Frieza, and it delivers a few great moments that stand alongside the franchise’s best.

One Piece (Punk Hazard Arc)
A Fun Gag In A Long And Divisive Saga
Considering it has been around for roughly a quarter of a century, One Piece introducing a body swap element was bound to happen sooner or later. This situation transpires during the Punk Hazard Arc, with Law using his Devil Fruit to cause Sanji and Nami, Franky and Chopper, and Smoker and Tashigi to swap bodies.
Although important in the grand scheme of things, Punk Hazard is not generally regarded as a high point in One Piece, with the saga overstaying its welcome in the anime adaptation. That said, the body swap gag leads to some pretty funny moments, particularly Robin’s anger at seeing Chopper’s adorableness twisted by Franky’s personality.

Gintama (Soul Switch Arc)
A Short But Hilarious Gintama Arc That Sees Gintoki And Hijikata Swap Bodies
Gintama is well known for parodying and lampshading a variety of tropes, clichés, and archetypes due to its primary status as a comedy series. While it may not constantly center around the subject, Gintama has also done its own spin on the body-swapping trope in the Soul Switch Arc, in which Gintoki and Hijikata’s souls end up in the wrong bodies.

The Gintama series is full of hilarious jokes, but these famous running gags are without a doubt the funniest in the show.
In true Gintama fashion, the insanity does not stop there. It turns out that half of Gintoki’s soul possessed a dead cat, turning it into an amnesiac monster. The other members of the Yorozuya and Shinsengumi also get roped into the mess as well, and soon nearly the entire main cast has ended up with their bodies switched. The result is one of the best examples of how Gintama can take a concept and spin it out of control in a matter of minutes.
In episode 173, Gintoki also switches bodies with Sadaharu.

After trying to figure out what is happening to them, they learn that they are the subject of an experiment by an unknown entity called Heartseed. Kokoro Connect is a very dramatic series that focuses on the bonds of friendship and the emotional bonds that people have. By undergoing these challenges together and coming out on top, the group slowly comes to understand each other in new ways. While body-swapping does not remain at the core of the series’ main issue, it still plays a big role for a large part of the series.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (Episodes 9 And 10)
Sisters Swap Bodies
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai should not be judged by its title, which suggests fanservice-heavy shenanigans. While incorporating a girl in a bunny suit, this hook is used to explore Mai’s psyche, as she feels so unseen that she starts to genuinely disappear. The anime is structured around Adolescence Syndrome cases, with the male lead, Sakuta, helping out girls who are struggling with a supernatural manifestation of their insecurities.
In episode 9, Mai and her sister, Nodoka, swap bodies, forcing them to live as each other for a couple of days. This might have been manageable if they were just ordinary teenagers, but they are both celebrities who have commitments that force them to be in the public eye. While not the best arc in Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, this two-episode saga does a great job of exploring Mai and Nodoka’s relationship, with the latter taking center stage.

Birdy the Mighty: Decode is a classic body swap anime in which a normal high school boy shares bodies with a powerful, superhero-like fighter. While the series is mostly based on action and intrigue, the dynamic has a lot of comedic moments, and the interaction between the two characters is fun to watch.
