Since the game’s release, Balatro has seen several updates, with a May patch adding additional Joker cards and the Perishable and Rental Joker mechanics. The game has also collaborated with some popular titles in its “Friends of Jimbo” updates, allowing players to customize the face cards in their deck to feature memorable characters from other games. So far, fans can choose from illustrations inspired by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us, The Binding of Issac, Vampire Survivors, Slay the Spire, Dave the Diver, and Stardew Valley. Understandably, LocalThunk has expressed interest in pursuing other collaborations in the future.
Balatro will see its first major update in 2025, though the specific contents have not yet been revealed. According to LocalThunk, the free update will introduce new strategies and ideas to the game “as a token of huge appreciation to the game’s brilliant and passionate community.” As of August 2024, Balatro had sold over 2 million copies, and the hit indie title is showing no signs of slowing down.
