  • Sam Wilson’s Captain America is an ideal leader for Avengers: Doomsday, offering a new persona with strong leadership.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in cinemas on May 1, 2026, and audiences are excited about this film. However, at the moment, much is a mystery, including who is actually the leader of the Avengers heading into Avengers: Doomsday and moving forward in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the past, Iron Man and Chris Evans’ version of Captain America have been positioned as the default leaders of the iconic group, and the other characters have accepted that. However, with neither of those characters part of the franchise anymore following Avengers: Endgame, it’s crucial that Marvel reveals who is taking up that role.

The Avengers Leadership Should Be A Big Storyline In Avengers: Doomsday

Many big names are rumored to be part of Avengers: Doomsday, such as Benedicr Cumberbatch and Chris Hemsworth, and that should lead to almost all of the biggest MCU heroes being involved. It will create one of the strongest Avengers lineups of all time, as they are prepared to fight against whatever threat Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom is going to provide. However, for them to coexist, there will need to be a strong leader, as all of these superheroes have huge personalities, powers, and egos.

In the past, tension has been shown between those within The Avengers, whether that be from the original movie where Hulk and Thor had an epic fight, or the significant fallout that took place during Captain America: Civil War. That’s why choosing who will be the new leader should be a significant part of the storyline. It’s a plot that audiences would genuinely be interested in seeing, as becoming the leader of The Avengers is a massive accomplishment for any character to have. It instantly will make them feel like they’re important and powerful, and the fact they’ll have the respect of all the other characters is going to be beneficial. However, it’s a position that many will want to have, and seeing the heroes argue is something that Doctor Doom could lean into in a bid to try and cause chaos within the group early on.

Marvel Should Also Determine Who Is An Avenger

The Avengers Movie

Becoming an Avenger was a huge deal in the early stages of the MCU, with Nick Fury going out of his way to headhunt who he wanted to be part of the group for specific reasons. It helped to make all those in the original lineup feel like they were on a higher level than others in the franchise, which was actually beneficial. It meant that audiences paid extra attention to the films they were involved in, and their storylines often fed directly to the grander Avengers movies. However, after the battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, knowing who actually is and isn’t an Avenger has become confusing.

While it made sense for every MCU hero to come together against Thanos because it had been built up, it’s not beneficial for everyone to actually be an Avenger. There has to be a cut-off where only the A-level Marvel stars are involved because that will draw people to Avengers films, knowing they will see the biggest and the best of the MCU. Every hero can come together again if the storyline is necessary, but for right now, Marvel should make it clear who is in and who is out. This will help streamline those stars and ensure that the storylines don’t always get muddled.

Captain America Is Ideal To Lead The Avengers Moving Forward

Anthony Mackie acting as Captain America

There are many great options for who could lead The Avengers, whether it’s original Avengers members such as Thor or Hawkeye or more powerful characters such as Doctor Strange; there’s no shortage of MCU stars who could lead the group and be taken seriously by moviegoers. However, out of all of them, Captain America still feels like the best fit. The character is naturally seen as a leader, dating back to how the United States of America presented him in the earlier movies. He has always been seen as a hero that people can depend upon and respect, including the other MCU stars.

The new version of Captain America is very different, with Sam Wilson having a unique personality compared to what Marvel did with Steve Rogers. Wilson isn’t quite as strict with playing by the rules, but his charisma is undeniable. Wilson has been in The Avengers for a while due to his role as the Falcon. Therefore, seeing him take up the position wouldn’t be a huge shock to audiences. On top of that, if this version of Captain America is chosen to lead The Avengers, it would create a huge level of trust for Marvel in Anthony Mackie. If Marvel wants him to be taken just as seriously as any other MCU star, then this is the way to go, as it will show everyone who the boss is in Avengers: Doomsday.
