Is the Democratic Party moving from Brat Summer to Midwestern Princess Fall?
After Kamala Harris announced Tim Walz as her Vice President running mate on Tuesday morning, it didn’t take long for the campaign to churn out more merch in support of the 60 year-old Minnesota Governor. Among the newest Harris-Walz offerings on the Kamala Harris website, whose proceeds directly support the Harris Victory Fund, is a camo hat imprinted with “Harris Walz” in yellow lettering.
If it looks familiar, it’s because it looks suspiciously similar to merch sold by Chappell Roan, whose website sells a nearly identical camo trucker hat with yellow lettering that reads, instead, “Midwestern Princess” for her 2023 breakthrough album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess.”
The Harris campaign made no direct references to Roan upon the merch drop Wednesday morning, but the internet was quick to point out the similarities. She’s “your favorite [politician’s] favorite artist,” perhaps?
It reached Roan herself on Twitter, where she responded to the news asking, “Is this real?”
Again, Harris’s team has not revealed their inspiration behind the new merch, but it does follow the campaign’s Gen Z-savvy choices. When Charli XCX tweeted out “Kamala is Brat” after the Vice President announced her presidential bid last month, the campaign was quick to adopt the hyperpop branding. On the Kamala HQ Twitter, Harris’s official rapid response page for her presidential campaign, its header banner reads “kamala hq” in black text over a green background — a nod to the simple yet effective cover art for Charli’s “Brat.”
