Stephen Colbert re-enacts JD Vance’s impossibly awkward donut shop encounter
Stephen Colbert has already spent time dissecting the awkwardness of Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance, but the VP candidate’s recent donut shop interaction takes things to whole new levels.
In the Late Show monologue above Colbert plays a clip of Vance attempting to interact with employees at the shop, telling the woman behind the counter, “I’m JD Vance, I’m running for vice president, good to see you,” and getting the hilariously nonplussed response: “OK”.
“I’m guessing not the response he was expecting,” says Colbert, before launching into a recreation of the exchange. “‘Er, I wrote a best-selling book,’. ‘OK.’ ‘They made it into a movie.’ ‘OK.’ ‘Anyway now I’m doing this, and I’m starting to worry that outside of my conservative bubble most folks are instantly repulsed by my personality, but at this point I’ve hitched my wagon to a man I hate, and I’m concerned that we won’t just lose the election, but I’ll lose any sense of who I am.’ ‘OK. So, um, you want a donut?’”
