Hosting the Emmys is usually the realm of late night show hosts and comedians, but on Sunday, Schitt’s Creek stars Eugene and Dan Levy took the mic. And folks, they crushed it.

The Emmy-winning father and son duo opened the 76th Emmy Awards with one of the best monologues I’ve ever seen at the Emmys, an event described by Dan Levy as “broadcast TVs biggest night for honouring movie stars on streaming services.”

While Dan Levy attempted not to break explaining to his dad that the + in streaming service titles doesn’t equal LGBTQ+ support from that company (lol), the pair gave nods to the big nominees like Shōgun, Hacks, The Bear, Reservation Dogs, Baby Reindeer, and more.

“Now some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy,” Eugene Levy said. “But in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”

But honestly, it was their family banter that took home the award for me.

“This is a very special night for me, you know, I played a lot of dads in my day,” Eugene Levy said. “Yes, I was a dad in American Pie, I was a dad in Finding Dory, and our show, Schitt’s Creek. But without question, my most rewarding dad role ever has been being your dad…in Schitt’s Creek. Because it got my first acting Emmy.”

As the crowd clapped came Dan Levy’s incredulous response: “Why are we applauding bad parenting?”
