Necesse: Best Tips & Tricks For Beginners
Necesse is an overwhelming game at the start when it first boots up. There are tens of things that the player can start at the same time, and there is an incredible amount of information on the screen. The mechanics of the game aren’t very complex, but they can be surprisingly in-depth, with the small realizations made after a few hours of gameplay changing the way players engage with the content entirely.

Necesse: How to Capture Animals
Table of Contents
Obtaining animals is a critical part of setting up a self sustaining farm in Necesse.
Knowing the small things makes all the difference at the start, when the game needs to hook you into its world and mechanics. There are a lot of good quality of life features in the game, but it can be difficult to find out about them, especially since the game doesn’t try to inform the player about anything in-depth.

Walls Are A Suggestion
Three Tiles Deep
The range of the player in Necesse is actually quite high, at least when it comes to placing items and mining stones. Rather than just hitting the item in front, players can target things up to two blocks away from them.
This means that players can essentially bypass walls to open chests if they’re close enough, mine ore, place torches, etc. Essentially, players don’t need to worry too much about the walls placed in their way to greatness. They’re more of a suggestion by the physics engine when it comes to blocking a pickaxe.

Object Placement Mechanics
Right For Right
The placement of objects can seem like a very small thing, but they can change the appearance of the base by quite a bit. Necesse doesn’t have a fixed rotation of objects, and it doesn’t let the player manually change the orientation of the object with a button or input either.
However, objects that the player places will face different directions anyway. The way players can control this orientation is by moving in certain directions before placing the object. If the player moves north, the object they’re placing will become north-facing. If they move east, it will become east-facing, and so on.
8
Recruitment Priority
Some Are More Equal Than Others
Recruiting NPCs is one of the core mechanics of the game that allows for good automation within a player’s base. The more NPCs that a player has, the more resources they’ll need to feed them, and the more hands they’ll have to manage their base.
There are different kinds of NPCs within the game that provide different services. Miners will go on cave expeditions, farmers will help upkeep the crops, and so on. However, villagers don’t have any particular talent, making them the worse of the bunch.
7
Traveling The World In Style
Skip The Unnecessary Bits
There are four directions that the player can travel to reach other islands, as well as four corners that connect the four directions. When they get to the edge of any island, players will get the option to choose which island they can go to.

Necesse: How to Use Map Fragments
Map fragments are items that players can pick up in Necesse. Here’s how to use them.
However, instead of being limited to one block ahead like many beginners assume, players can hop anywhere within a 5×5 grid starting from their current location. Additionally, players can set the coordinate method to a variety of different methods, such as relative to the player’s current location — or relative to the player’s initial spawn point.
6
Pillage Other Villages
Loot The Rapscallions For All Their Worth
There are small settlements found around the different islands of Necesse where NPCs reside. These residences have many useful resources and furniture that the player can use on their own base.
There is no negative effect of looting these villages for everything within them — even destroying them doesn’t have an effect other than removing the housing of the NPC that lives in said village. If the player doesn’t care about the NPC possibly dying to mobs at night, they can even take the walls of the village for their own use.
The Most Efficient Use Of Slots
Demon Cloaks, which can be found by defeating certain bosses, give the player an extra set of items that they can equip. This lets them have different presets for different scenarios, giving more versatility to their character.
Additionally, these equipment slots can be used as inventory space to store the appropriate items. Items placed in the trash slot don’t expire immediately either. They stay there until the player places something else on top, essentially acting as one more inventory slot.
4
Important Hotkeys
Shortcuts Make Life Easy
Learning the hotkeys for different actions is a must in a game like Necesse where there’s so much to do. The amount of time shaved off of the total load from pressing C to open the settlement menu instead of opening the inventory, finding the relevant button, and pressing it there isn’t all that much, but the convenience factor is hard to overstate.
There’s a programmable keybind to immediately change item slots, one to send stackable items to nearby storage, and one to obtain stackable items from nearby storage. These small things add up and make the gameplay much more enjoyable in the long run.
Some keybinds aren’t set by default and need to be assigned by the player.
3
Make And Use Potions
Consummables Don’t Bite — Promise
Potions are an essential part of the gameplay in Necesse. Since much of the process for obtaining the materials for potions and even making them can be automated, players should establish a farm — for some essential potions, like the humble health potion — as soon as possible.

Health potions in particular help the NPCs keep their health bars from depleting during fights and can be helpful to the player as well. There is even a dedicated hotkey for players to consume health potions.
2
Quest Your Way To Greatness
The Elder Has Goodies
The quest system in Necesse isn’t the most robust, but it is there for a reason. Completing the quests rewards the player with valuable items that cannot be easily obtained in any other way fairly early on, such as the lunchbox.
Talk to the Elder in the settlement and obtain the quests from him. They’re usually extermination quests regarding bosses, so players need a little bit of exploration and resource acquisition before they can start them, but they aren’t too challenging once the game gets going.
Remember to visit the settlement and talk to the Elder after completing the quest to get its rewards.
1
Start Automation Early
Passive Income Is The Best Income
It can seem like a daunting task, but automating basic tasks is surprisingly easy in Necesse. Players can set specific things to be crafted at specific workstations, set farming zones, forestry zones, husbandry zones, etc., and set the work priorities of different NPCs in just a couple of minutes.
Some tasks can only be performed by specific NPCs, while some are more general and can be easily performed by anyone. Make sure to allow the NPCs to access storage chests so they can store and access the items from them when required.
