Confining Explained in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero

Published

Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero stars Marona, a Chroma, whose ability to see Phantoms and Confine them to objects is a major part of each encounter. Except for Marona herself, all the Units you can use in battle are Phantoms, who must first be Confined to give them a physical form in battle. As a result, knowing how Confine works is essential to your success in combat.

The object a Phantom is Confined to in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero will influence their stats in various ways, making it important for players to consider the items available to them in each combat. This guide will discuss the various ways Confining can influence your units in combat and how to take advantage of an item’s properties.

The Confine Command

Phantom Brave_The Lost Hero_Confine Command

The Confine Command, exclusive to Marona, allows you to target an object in range and have a Phantom possess it, summoning that Phantom to the battlefield for a number of turns equal to their REMOVE stat (this counts down whenever the Unit takes a turn.) Any object that can be picked up can also be possessed by your Phantoms using this command, so as long as there’s an item on the map, and you aren’t at your limit, you can call more Phantoms.

While you can technically use any item to summon any unit, examining the item will reveal any Item Effects and Protections associated with it, which will influence the summoned unit. As maps get more difficult, analyzing the items available to you and how they’ll affect your Phantoms becomes increasingly important. In the next section, we’ll talk about Item Effects and Protections, which are the two biggest ways items will influence a Phantom you summon into them.

Picking up and throwing an item to a better position before using Confine can allow you to position your units in unusual ways and set them up more effectively for their turn. In a pinch, you can even throw an item Marona (or another unit) is holding and then use that item as a Confine Target. (Items you brought with you into the map have a 100% Plunder Chance, so you’ll get them back after the map anyway.)

Item Effects & Protections

Phantom Brave_The Lost Hero_Protection Effects

Item Effects and Protections are the two most important elements to consider when picking an item to use Confine on. Let’s start with Protections. Protections are represented by glowing lines that connect objects on the map, as seen in the image above. You can see an item’s Protection Effect by moving the cursor over it and pressing the display stats button (L1 on PS4/5.) In the example above, the Rock, Flower, and Palm Tree share the protection “Attack/Defense +30%”, which boosts the Attack and Defense of anything with that Protection by 30%.

While this isn’t very useful for a Rock or a Plant (unless you plan to pick it up and use it as a weapon, which is both possible and a valid strategy in this game), it is incredibly helpful to your Phantoms, who will retain this protection effect if you summon them into the item. Protection effects are always linked to two or more objects and will remain active as long as two of the linked objects remain on the map.

This means that removing a Protection effect means throwing all other items with that Protection effect off the edge of the map, or destroying them outright, making them quite tricky to get rid of. This becomes even harder when you’ve turned one of those items into a powerful defensive unit to protect it from the enemy’s attempts to remove it, so consider doing so if there’s an effect you’re relying heavily on.

Each item has an effect, which can be seen in the effects menu mentioned earlier. It can also be seen as an icon underneath the item. Using the same example from before, that rock has the “DEF+10%” effect, which boosts the DEF of a unit by 10% when you Confine them to it. Examining the available effects on the field can allow you to make your units much more powerful by playing to their strengths.

Plunder Chance

One final element to consider when Confining a Unit to an item is their Plunder Chance. This is displayed in the menu when selecting a unit to Confine, as shown in the image above. This is the percentage chance for the unit to “Plunder” the item when Confined to it. This means that they’ll bring the item with them when they leave the map, adding it to your inventory afterwards, and is useful for grabbing useful weapons and items that you find.

On the other hand, removing items with useful Effects or Protections from the map while you still need them can be harmful to your strategy, so it’s worth choosing a unit with a low Plunder Chance if you’re Confining to an item you want to stick around when their REMOVE runs out. Units like the Thief and the Scrabbit tend to have a high Plunder Chance, and higher level units will generally have better Plunder Chance, though it seems that the level of the item you’re trying to Plunder will influence the odds.
