one star wars side character s recurrence in several games is not for nothing

Despite Disney owning the Star Wars property and producing their own series of new Star Wars video games, many Star Wars games now considered to be Legends are still actively being remastered and played. From the Kyle Katarn-leading FPS Star Wars: Dark Forces to the recently remastered beat ’em up Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles, classic and beloved Star Wars games of yesteryear continue to persist in the minds of new and old players alike. As Star Wars masters and padawans begin to play many of these retro games, they may see one important Star Wars character repeatedly pop up in Legends games: General Crix Madine.

Crix Madine’s Many Star Wars Legends Game Appearances

First appearing in 1983’s Star Wars: Episode 6: Return of the Jedi, Crix Madine was introduced as a Rebel Alliance General who played a major role in coordinating the Battle of Endor. During the Alliance’s briefing on the Battle, Madine informed ground troops of how they’ll use the stolen Imperial Lambda-class T-4a shuttle to sneak behind enemy lines and destroy the second Death Star’s shield generator. Madine later took part in the Battle of Endor aboard an unknown Mon Calamari cruiser as shown in shots from cut scenes in Return of the Jedi. While Madine went on to appear in numerous expanded media since his film debut, he was next mentioned in interactive media in the 1993 flight simulation game Star Wars: X-Wing.

In Star Wars: X-Wing, Madine and the newly joined Sullustans helped coordinate a squadron of X-Wings to destroy the Imperial Star Destroyer Invincible. Madine makes his next game appearance in 1995’s Star Wars: Dark Forces, wherein he was still serving as an Imperial Officer but secretly supplying the Alliance with information. Here, Madine informs the Alliance of a weapons research facility on the planet Fest used for the production of Dark Troopers. Shortly thereafter, Madine is found out and sent to Orinackra for execution but is rescued by Katarn. Madine is then recovered and fully defects to the Alliance on Corellia in 1998’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. He also appears in 1998’s Star Wars: Rebellion, but even this game is considered non-canon in Legends.

Crix Madine in 21st Century Star Wars Legends Games

Crix Madine continued to appear in relatively brief roles throughout the rest of the Rogue Squadron games in the early 2000s. In 2001’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader, Madine leads the player in preparing for the Battle of Endor by stealing an Imperial Lambda-class Shuttle and Tibanna gas for the Rebel fleet. The final Rogue Squadron game, 2003’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike, sees Madine order Wedge Antilles to rescue scientists from Storm Commandos on Geonosis, destroy a supposed Imperial Tibanna gas facility, destroy a Dubrillion superlaser facility, and destroy a Super Star Destroyer. Finally, in 2009’s Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron, Madine assists the clone X2 during the Battle of Endor.

The Significance of Crix Madine in Star Wars Canon and Legends

While Crix Madine may seem like a minor character in Star Wars, being primarily known for just one scene in one film, his history in Legends games and additional expanded media has illustrated how significant Madine was to the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic. Madine risked his life to aid the rebellion while he was still enlisted in the Empire. His actions helped prevent the widespread launch of Dark Troopers, stop missions conducted by Storm Commandos, destroy a Super Star Destroyer, and complete the decisive act of eliminating both the second Death Star and Emperor Palpatine. Madine’s instrumental role in the Rebel Alliance led to him earning high leadership roles in the New Republic until his death in active service 12 years After the Battle of Yavin.

Despite Disney rebooting Star Wars’ expanded universe in 2012, much of Crix Madine’s core history remains the same as his Legends counterpart, albeit small events in his life are different. Disney’s Madine is still an Imperial Officer turned Rebel Alliance leader who helped coordinate the Battle of Endor. However, little is known about his history during the Galactic Civil War beyond his defection. Instead, Madine is known to have helped coordinate counterattacks against Imperial remnants following Endor, but is rumored to have died five years after the Battle of Yavin. Given Disney’s relatively short time producing Star Wars stories, Disney’s Madine will likely play more prominent roles in future stories focused on the Galactic Civil War.

Crix Madine has yet to appear in any Star Wars video games set in Disney Star Wars canon.
