On January 21, Final Fantasy 14 released Patch 7.16, which introduced the conclusion of the Dawntrail Role Quest series and saw some PvP balance updates. Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.16 arrived one month after the previous update, Patch 7.15, brought about the next chapter of the fan-favorite Hildibrand saga.
The Dawntrail Role Quest series finale headlines Final Fantasy 14‘s latest update. Although the Warrior of Light recovers stolen Turali artifacts from a gang known as the Passage of the Unbound, the Unbound’s leader, a villainous Viera named Apyaahi, remains at large. After completing all five previous Dawntrail Role Quest chains, such as the Melee DPS and Healer lines, and the main story quest “Dawntrail,” players can accept a new quest called “Picking Up the Torch” in Tuliyollal. Final Fantasy 14 players who successfully thwart Apyaahi’s plans will be rewarded with the “Pose of the Unbound” emote and the Bright Bustle Orchestrion Roll.

A curious Final Fantasy 14 player has compiled information on all the dialogue in the game to determine who has the most voice lines.
Though Patch 7.16 will see that quest chain conclude, that is not the only thing the update will bring. Final Fantasy 14‘s 7.16 update also introduced changes to the Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) alliance raid. Following player feedback, Square Enix added a way to exchange Clouddark Demimateria 1 for Clouddark Demimateria 2 at a rate of 5-to-1 by speaking to a Viera NPC named Uah’shepya in Solution Nine. Square Enix also confirmed that two of the Cloud of Darkness’ attacks, Lateral-core Phaser and Core-lateral Phaser, were oppositely labeled in Patch 7.15 and have been adjusted accordingly in Patch 7.16. Other issues, such as FPS drops on the macOS game client when using specific controllers, were fixed with the 7.16 update. Final Fantasy 14 players will require approximately 303 MB of storage space for Patch 7.16, though the exact amount will vary on PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
Additionally, Final Fantasy 14‘s 7.16 update made some PvP-specific Job changes to coincide with the launch of Crystalline Conflict Season 13. Following up on adjustments made in Patch 7.15, Jobs such as the Viper, Machinist, and Black Mage saw key parts of their offensive toolkits buffed to keep up with the competition. However, Jobs like Ninja, Astrologian, and Scholar received slight nerfs to their defenses. Various PvP actions such as Recuperate and Purify will activate quicker than before, resulting in snappier responses and counterplays.
The release of Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.16 marks the end of the 7.1 update cycle. As Final Fantasy 14 focuses on releasing Patch 7.2 in the spring, it remains to be seen what Square Enix will do to keep players engaged.

Battle System

PVP Job Changes
- In order to improve playability, we have shortened the time between execution and effect activation for a variety of actions.
- We will continue to take into account feedback regarding timing that feels inordinately slow and area of effect attacks centered around the player that feel ineffective as we consider adjustments for Patch 7.2.
- As healing jobs’ recovery abilities currently have a great influence on matches, we have made adjustments to restrain aspects we felt were extreme.
- Additionally, we have further enhanced jobs that we felt haven’t been performing adequately since Patch 7.15.
Dark Knight
- As dark knight was exhibiting lower KO capabilities compared to other tanks, we reverted part of Eventide’s potency that had been reduced in Patch 7.1.
Ninja
- We strengthened a number of ninjutsu characteristics in Patch 7.1, but Doton’s damage reduction effect in particular was deemed slightly too effective, so it has been reduced.
Viper
- We received feedback that viper’s limit break felt lacking in comparison with other melee DPS jobs, and in light of viper’s statistically lower KO capabilities, we have increased the potency of certain actions available after limit break.
Machinist
- We enhanced machinist in Patch 7.15, but as KOs continue to be lacking, we have increased the potency of Full Metal Field and shortened its recast time.
Black Mage
- Thanks to adjustments made in Patch 7.11 and Patch 7.15, black mage’s ability to continually deal great damage from a distance has greatly improved.
- However, we found the risk of using Burst at close contact did not have a proper payoff, so we increased its potency and barrier protection to help the action be used more aggressively.
Summoner
- We increased the potency of Mountain Buster to provide more payoff for the risk of drawing close to an enemy.
- Additionally, to provide ease of movement, we included the player themself in Slipstream’s increased movement speed effect.
White Mage
- The chronic use of Afflatus Purgation causes excessive application of its regenerative effect, Temperance, so we have lowered the latter’s cure potency.
- In contrast, white mage is still slightly lacking offensively, so we have increased the potency of Glare IV.
- We also changed its previous action from Seraph Strike to Glare III to ensure that Glare IV is not accidentally executed after using Seraph Strike.
Scholar
- Summon Seraph strengthens actions like the self-healing Recuperate and greatly affects the entire party by increasing the amount of HP recovered by nearby members.
- By reducing its effect, we have tempered this highly defensive ability.
Astrologian
- Microcosmos’s healing ability has been reduced, as it was greatly affecting the entire party’s defense.
The time between action execution and effect activation has been shortened for the following PvP actions:
- All Jobs: Recuperate and Purify
- Paladin: Shield Smite and Intervene
- Warrior: Primal Rend, Onslaught, Orogeny, Chaotic Cyclone, Primal Wrath, and Primal Scream
- Dark Knight: Impalement and Salted Earth
- Gunbreaker: Fated Circle, Fated Brand, and Terminal Trigger
- Monk: Dragon Kick, Demolish, Leaping Opo, Phantom Rush, Wind’s Reply, Rising Phoenix, and Earth’s Reply
- Dragoon: Wyrmwind Thrust and Sky Shatter
- Ninja: Dokumori, Forked Raiju, and Fleeting Raiju
- Samurai: Mineuchi, Hyosetsu, Mangetsu, Oka, Kaeshi: Namikiri, Tendo Setsugekka, Tendo Kaeshi Setsugekka, and Zantetsuken
- Reaper: Lemure’s Scythe and Tenebrae Lemurum
- Viper: World-swallower
- Bard: Silent Nocturne and Repelling Shot
- Machinist: Marksman’s Spite
- Black Mage: Burst
- Summoner: Mountain Buster
- Red Mage: Vice of Thorns
- Pictomancer: Clawed Muse and Retribution of the Madeeen
- White Mage: Afflatus Purgation
- Astrologian: Gravity 2 and Oracle
- Sage: Phlegma 3 and Psyche

Resolved Issues
The following issues have been addressed.
- An issue in Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) wherein the actions “Lateral-core Phaser” and “Core-lateral Phaser” were oppositely labeled.
- An issue with first-time completion duties wherein the following message was erroneously displayed if players new to the duty were present: “One or more party members are new to this duty. Upon completion, a bonus may be awarded based on the number of new party members.”
- An issue with the dragoon PvP action Wyrmwind Thrust wherein using High Jump directly after would cause the potency of Wyrmwind Thrust to decrease.
- An issue wherein the graphics for the ex-arch’s jacket appeared incorrectly when equipped to certain races. Product images on the online store will be updated shortly.
- An issue with certain gamepads wherein FPS would decrease upon connection. (Mac version only)
