Table of Contents
- ESRB ratings hint at native releases for Resident Evil games on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
- Games include Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 4 HD, and Origins Collection.
- Backward compatibility allows playing these Resident Evil games on new consoles without waiting for ports.
If recent ESRB ratings are to be believed, four old-school Resident Evil games could be getting native releases on PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles. Resident Evil is one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time, with Capcom regularly releasing new entries, ports, remasters, and remakes since the 1990s.
Thanks to these efforts, the vast majority of main series Resident Evil games are playable on modern hardware in some capacity. For example, while the original Resident Evil 2 has yet to come to consoles, the RE2 remake is readily available. Still, there are many Resident Evil games that lack native releases on the newest hardware, but it looks like that’s going to change in the near future.

With over eight mainline entries behind it, the Resident Evil series has amassed a catalog of boss battles which vary wildly in their quality.
An ESRB rating for Resident Evil 6 on Xbox Series X consoles was recently spotted, sparking speculation that the highly controversial game would be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X at some point soon. It’s now been discovered that similar listings appear for other Resident Evil games, including the HD remaster of the original Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Origins Collection, which includes the HD remasters of both the Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil Zero. This seems to suggest that these games are set to get native releases on modern hardware, but time will tell if that’s actually the case. It is strange that the ESRB ratings only mention Xbox Series consoles and not PS5, but unless some kind of exclusivity deal has been reached, it wouldn’t make much sense for the franchise to skip one platform over the other.

There is an Xbox Developer Direct on January 23 that is expected to have an announcement about a Japanese gaming IP with decades of history. It’s been speculated that the franchise in question may be Resident Evil, with these native releases on Series X/S consoles coming alongside the reveal of a new game. However, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. The more likely scenario is that the Xbox Developer Direct mystery game is published by Square Enix. Ultimately, Xbox fans will just have to tune in to the show on Thursday, January 23 at 10am PST to find out for sure.
In the meantime, those that don’t care to have native releases of these Resident Evil games should note that they are all already playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Thanks to backward compatibility, gamers can purchase and play all these Resident Evil games on the latest hardware without having to wait for fresh ports.
