According to Kristian Harloff, Natalie Portman is close to signing a deal to return as Padme for the second season of Ahsoka. She took on that role in the Star Wars prequel movies and hasn’t been involved in that universe ever since. The popular actress hasn’t appeared since Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, but she’s made it clear in the past that she’s open to potentially returning and that now seems like a distinct possibility.

Seeing Padme return would be an interesting decision, not only because it would guarantee that there will be some prequel timeline within the series but also because several other former Star Wars actors have been attached to the project. Ewan McGregor is rumored to be returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hayden Christensen is set to reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker, and Ariana Greenblatt is expected to appear as a young Ahsoka.

While nothing is confirmed at this stage, all signs point toward some flashback scenes. This could be achieved via the World Between Worlds, a tool used in the original season to take audiences back to the Clone Wars era of the Star Wars universe. Harloff has speculated that this is how Padme will be utilized in the upcoming series, but flashbacks can be achieved in other ways. The series could cut back in time or use memories. However, given that something has already been explained in lore, it would make sense for Disney to continue using the World Between Worlds.

Seeing Padame return would be somewhat unexpected, as few Star Wars fans have anticipated her being brought back at any point due to how the prequel characters are often forgotten about. However, bringing her back will be a breath of fresh air due to the fact she’s a character that isn’t talked about as often as others. That’s what helps to make the Disney Plus shows so enjoyable, as there is always room for nostalgic cameos.

Bringing Padame back will get Star Wars fans talking, even if it’s only for a single episode. Audiences want to see more stories from the prequel time period, and diving into the backstory of Ahsoka as a character even more will only strengthen the character for the rest of the series. Considering some of the names rumored, it appears that Ahsoka is going to have a lot of nods to the past and some strong prequel links, which will certainly be exciting if done right, adding more backstory to the characters involved.
