It’s hard to hate the fun and bubbly protagonist known as Claire Redfield from the Resident Evil universe, though considering her line of work, it should come as no surprise that there are still a handful of characters who are less than fond of her. Though Claire is obviously a kind and caring individual at heart, not everyone sees it this way, with some viewing her as little more than an irritating troublemaker, a constant thorn in their side, or simply just someone who doesn’t deserve the recognition she receives from others.

Resident Evil: 8 Games That Don’t Have Safe Rooms

Despite being a tradition within the series, some Resident Evil games leave safe rooms out entirely, ramping up the tension of the gameplay.

Needless to say, several characters from this much-beloved franchise of games have shown true disdain for the fan-favorite protagonist, but what exactly has pushed them to possess such a burning hatred for her? It’s time to see who among the Resident Evil cast could be considered ‘haters’ of Claire, and the reasons for their unpopular views.

Alfred Ashford

Alfred Grows More Annoyed At Claire’s Existence The More She Learns About Him

Released

When Alfred first shows himself to Claire in Code Veronica, he starts randomly flailing his sniper rifle around the room while mocking the intruder of his palace, claiming that she won’t be alive for much longer. As the game continues though, and Claire begins uncovering the hideous acts Alfred has committed on Rockfort Island, he starts becoming much more frustrated at her presence, especially when she barges in on him dressing up as his sister, exposing his biggest secret.

If Claire hadn’t caused so much chaos on Rockfort Island, Alfred would have been able to live his ideal life of living by his lonesome and obsessing over Alexia. With Claire running rampant across the island though, Alfred was forced to take action and quickly developed a seething hatred towards the Redfield who ruined everything for him.

Ron Davis

A Senator Who’s High-And-Mighty Attitude Made Him Despise The Legendary Claire Redfield

  • First Appearance: Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)

Ron Davis is a cowardly senator who shows up in the Resident Evil Degeneration CG movie and who runs into Claire at the very beginning of the story during a zombie attack in an airport. Despite Claire saving Davis’ backside on more than a few occasions, his high-and-mighty and self-obsessed attitude means he always looks down on Claire and can often be seen insulting her, as he also does with Leon later in the movie.

It’s hard not to love the wise-cracking and effortlessly cool Leon Kennedy, but believe it or not, some characters have come to hate his guts.

However, what turns this dislike into hatred is the fact that Davis was secretly in cahoots with the movie’s major villain, Downing, and would have gotten away with a ton of cash if Claire hadn’t put an end to his insider trading schemes by intercepting Downing. Thankfully, Davis does eventually get what was coming to him thanks to the combined efforts of Leon and Claire.

Alexia Ashford

Alexia Hated The Sight Of Claire; One Half Of What She Calls The “Genetically Inferior Siblings”

Admittedly, Alexia doesn’t interact with Claire much throughout the course of Code Veronica’s story, but on the rare instances that she does speak to Claire, Alexia makes it very clear that she is far from a fan. Nowhere is this made more evident than during an encounter near the end of the game where Alexia refers to Claire and Chris as “genetically inferior siblings”, suggesting that she can’t stand how the two of them try to look down on her and her brother.

While Alexia would attempt to restore her family’s name after returning to the world after a long slumber, it would be Claire, along with a little help from Chris, who would stop her from becoming the maniacal mastermind that she had always dreamed of.

Frederic Downing

Claire Would Be The One To Stop Downing From Becoming A Filthy Rich Black Market Dealer

  • First Appearance: Resident Evil Degeneration (2008)

Though snazzy businessman Frederic Downing tries his best to get close to Claire throughout the story of Resident Evil Degeneration, this ends up backfiring on him after she finds out that he is the mastermind behind most of the terror incidents that occur in the movie. In truth, Downing secretly was trying to sell off viruses to the highest bidders through the black market and had little care for any casualties that were racked up in the process.

Once Claire cracks his true intentions after getting to know him a little better, she and Leon intercept Downing at the end of the film, forcing him to give himself up and ultimately squandering his entire plan. Considering Downing would come very close to becoming filthy rich and absurdly powerful, it only makes sense that he would come to hate Claire’s guts after she pieced together what he was really up to, but it’s certainly a good thing that she did, considering how dangerous this guy is.

Annette Birkin

Annette Would Temporarily Despise Claire For Being A Better Motherly Figure To Sherry

With her husband turning into a terrifying mutant and rampaging across the city, and her daughter being nowhere to be seen, Annette comes across as a pretty cold and disillusioned character when she shows up in Resident Evil 2. For Claire’s campaign, Annette hates the idea of Claire mothering Annette’s own daughter, Sherry, expressing her grievances on more than a few occasions.

The Raccoon City Incident didn’t just result in a town full of zombies, as there were also a few other horrific monsters who prowled the streets too.

This is despite the fact that Annette herself proves to be a pretty lousy motherly figure for Sherry for much of the outbreak, so her hatred for Claire at this time was most likely birthed out of jealousy. Annette would eventually take on a softer view of Claire once she came to realize she would be the only chance of stopping William, but during their first few encounters, there was some real intensity in the air.

Dr. Antonio Taylor

Antonio Taylor’s Misinformed View Of TerraSave Caused Him To Express His Frustration Towards Claire In Death Island

  • First Appearance: Resident Evil Death Island (2023)

TerraSave, the anti-bio-terror organization that Claire joins up with after Resident Evil 2, has saved thousands of lives thanks to their actions, though not everyone is a big fan of their work, with Antonio Taylor being a prime example. Taylor shows up in Resident Evil: Death Island as one of the few survivors still left on Alcatraz, but after learning about Claire, and her affiliation with TerraSave, he immediately blames her and the group for instigating the Harvardville Airport attack which is seen in the Degeneration CG movie.

While Taylor does eventually start to respect Claire a little more after she treats his wounds, he is just one of the many people in the Resident Evil universe who harbor a hatred for Claire due to their misinformed views on TerraSave, who have been immorally framed numerous times.

Leon and Claire both interact with different survivors within Raccoon City in their respective campaigns in Resident Evil 2. For Claire, one of the key individuals she will encounter is Irons, the violent and frankly sickening chief constable of the R.P.D. who comes to despise Claire because of the lengths she’s willing to go to rescue Sherry from his clutches.

The truth is, Irons wanted Sherry’s locket since it contains a G-Virus sample, but he may have also simply wanted to use her as a bargaining chip to guarantee his escape from the city. Irons would show a lot of hostility towards Claire for attempting to thwart his plans, especially in the remake where it’s made crystal clear just how much he hates her.
