Key Takeaways

  • Final Fantasy 7 was crowned the top PlayStation game in a recent Famitsu poll, with Monster Hunter at 2nd & Xenogears at 3rd.
  • PS1 dominated the Famitsu poll with 16 games, while neither PS5 nor PS Vita made the list.
  • The poll focuses largely on story-driven titles, with multiple Final Fantasy games included as well as Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 3. Kingdom Hearts 2 and the original Resident Evil also appeared in the top 30.

The results of a poll to crown the Top 30 PlayStation games of all time were released, and the original version of Final Fantasy 7 took the top spot. The poll was created as part of the PlayStation 30th Anniversary celebrations, and over half of the listed entries were JRPGs made by companies such as Square Enix, Sony, and Capcom.

On December 3, 1994, Sony entered the console market with the launch of the PlayStation in Japan. Western markets would release the console almost a year later, starting in North America and Europe in September 1995. Since then, PlayStation has competed with Nintendo and Microsoft as one of the “big three” console manufacturers. To mark 30 years since the PlayStation was launched in Japan, Sony gave PS5 users some new 30th anniversary themes to try out for a limited time. These themes come with sound effects and wallpapers from each prior PlayStation generation, so fans can pick their favorites while they are available.

Although Final Fantasy 7 was crowned as the top PlayStation game of all time by a poll, 29 other titles also received their due. According to Twitter user Game Data Library, the poll was run by Japanese publication Famitsu, with approximately 4,000 voters. The Final Fantasy franchise had five entries on the list, with Final Fantasy 10 also cracking the top five at number four. Eight of Square Enix’s top PlayStation titles, such as Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King and Kingdom Hearts 2, made Famitsu’s list. Among the other companies with multiple entries are Sony with seven games, and Capcom and Konami with four apiece. Three of Capcom’s four entries were from the Monster Hunter franchise, including Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in the number two slot. Xenogears and Resident Evil also appeared in the top five, in the third and fifth spots, respectively.
