Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a critically acclaimed adaptation of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 and the company plans to continue that goodwill with further Cyberpunk projects in the animation space.

Animated video game adaptations have become a popular trend recently, with Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, Arcane: League of Legends, and Castlevania: Nocturne being the medium of choice for game publishers to bring their popular IPs to life on screen. CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky road after its initial launch in 2020, but one element that helped regain faith in the project was its excellent anime adaptation, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The series was set in the game’s world of Night City, following a street kid named David Martinez who becomes a black-market mercenary known as an edgerunner. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners received a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and was beloved by fans, bringing a new level of interest to Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt Red Confirms Second Cyberpunk 2077 Animation

While the future of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners may be uncertain, the outlook for Cyberpunk 2077 on-screen is looking bright. CD Projekt Red’s Chief Financial Officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, announced at the company’s recent quarterly earnings results meeting (via VGC) that the company is working on another animation project with Netflix, set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.

I’m also very happy to announce that we’re working on another animation project set in the Cyberpunk universe, which will be released on Netflix.

Nielubowicz did not provide any further details on the animated project, but the company previously said Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was intended to be a standalone project with Studio Trigger, suggesting that this may not necessarily be another season of the beloved anime. Netflix had hinted at another Cyberpunk 2077 collaboration during Geeked Week earlier this year, saying simply “Return to Night City”, but provided no further details on the story or any of the creatives involved. It seems like the new animation project that Nielubowicz discussed could be what the Netflix teaser was hinting at. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners spent four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 charts upon release and helped boost sales of Cyberpunk 2077 to over 20 million copies. It’s no surprise that CD Projekt Red would want to continue riding this wave by investing in new animated projects that will maintain the audience’s interest while the company works on a sequel to the game.

A Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Project Is Also In Development

CD Projekt Red also provided an update on the live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 that was announced in 2023. Back then, the company revealed it was working with Anonymous Content on bringing a live-action title based on the Cyberpunk 2077 IP to life and was looking for the right story to adapt. During the most recent earnings report (via GameSpot), CD Projekt Red revealed the live-action Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation is still in development but has seen progression in the past 12 months and could be shopped to potential studios within the next year. Based on this, the live-action adaptation is still a few years away from release.
