Spider-Man 4 Should Modernize Peter Parker's Job
Key Takeaways
Table of Contents
- Spider-Man 4 could explore the trio attending college or entering adulthood for a fresh take.
- Previous films saw Peter as a high school student while he worked for the Daily Bugle.
- Perhaps they should consider modernizing Peter’s job to be a social media influencer or work for a blog.
While there’s very little known about the plot for Spider-Man 4, one thing is clear. High school life is over for Peter, Ned, and MJ. Just what’s next is very much up in the air and will depend quite a bit on how far the next movie wants to jump into the future. At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the trio were planning their college destinations, though Ned and MJ were heading off to MIT without Peter thanks to the spell that made everyone forget he was the heroic web-slinger, which also made his friends forget he was their friend.
So, will the movie be set in Boston with the trio all attending college? Or will they jump quite far ahead from No Way Home and have them all entering adulthood? It should surprise no one that none of the actors who play the formerly close-knit group are anywhere near high school age. It wouldn’t be terrible to see them playing adults and trying to live their adult lives. If the film goes that way, Peter needs to find a job, but it shouldn’t be the same job he’s known for now. Marvel should shake things up and make the movie more in line with our times.

While Tom Holland is now set to put in an unprecedented fourth solo performance leading a Spider-Man film, there’s another project he has to do first.
Messing With Spider-Man Canon
So far, the Tom Holland version of Spider-Man films hasn’t had to tackle how exactly Peter will make ends meet as he’s been in high school the entire time. That’s had him younger than either the Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield versions, who both started in high school but quickly jumped to and older version. As it happens both of those versions of Peter land jobs as photographers for the Daily Bugle. And of course the reason they do that in the movies is because it’s the most canonically beloved version of Parker in the comics.
One of the earliest versions of the superhero had Parker go to work with J. Jonah Jameson in order to get photos for the big news stories. Soon, he finds success taking pictures of himself in action as Spider-Man. The job serves the purpose of earning him money as he gets shots no one else can, while also giving him an alibi should anyone somehow think he was actually Spider-Man.
Spider-Man 4could honor that canon and put Holland’s Parker in the same situation. However, so far, it feels as though Marvel has made just enough tweaks to this version of Spidey as to put its own stamp on him. having him do something other than a newspaper photographer. Marvel could modernize him while also putting in another job that might fit the story and allow for Holland’s character to stand out more from the crowd of Spider-Man movies.
Parker’s Job Should Jump Into The 21st Century
The most 21st-century change to the character that would still stay in line with the Spider-Man canon would be to work through social media somehow. Having Peter do something like running a Tik Tok or Instagram-like social media would be one way to go that could also offer a little bit of humor in the mix. This would also allow him to work for himself and not have to have a boss to answer to or make excuses to when he has to disappear to fight crime.
This would also allow him to work for himself and not have a boss to answer to or make excuses to when he has to disappear to fight crime.
Something like this could also still allow him to be a photographer of sorts. If he figured out how to take pictures of himself in action and post them on social media, they would definitely go viral. This would allow him to become a rather big social media guy and have a job that allows him to fight crime whenever he needs it.
The flip side of making Peter Parker a social media star is that there is a definite stigma associated with people who make a living posting everything on social media. Holland’s version of the character doesn’t seem to have that kind of personality. He’s not someone who would want to spend time cultivating an online presence and then earning money because of it.
For now, there’s not much info on the plot for Spider-Man 4
There is another way to bring his job as a newspaper photographer into the modern world without making too many changes. Perhaps this Peter could work for an online blog or even a gossip website. Rather than working for a traditional paper he’d have a boss haranguing him for digital photos. Or, if they wanted to keep Peter working for J. Jonah Jameson, they could have him be someone who shoots video or gets digital images for this version of the Daily Bugle boss, who appears to be more of an Alex Jones-type character. This would allow for Spider-Man 4 to bring Parker into the present as far as what his job is while still honoring the canon.
