It seems as though Microsoft may be preparing to bring Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition to PlayStation consoles. Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition was first released on PC in 2019 before finally making its way to Xbox consoles in 2023. The updated version of the real-time strategy classic has earned mostly positive reviews and remains one of the most popular games in the long-running series to this day.
Microsoft has capitalized on Age of Empires 2‘s lasting popularity with updates and new content. In fact, new Age of Empires 2 DLC is releasing on November 14 in the form of Chronicles: Battle for Greece. The new Age of Empires 2 DLC will feature a brand-new campaign and three new civilizations for players to utilize. At the time of this writing, only those on PC and Xbox can play Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and look forward to the new content, but that could be changing at some point in the near future.

Reddit user draconis90 spotted Age of Empires 2 players with PlayStation icons next to their usernames. This has prompted speculation that Xbox could be bringing Age of Empires 2 to PlayStation. Microsoft has made it clear that it plans on bringing more of its games to PlayStation, and so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if an Age of Empires 2 PlayStation port was in the works.

Microsoft’s initiative to bring Xbox games to PlayStation started earlier this year with four titles. Sea of Thieves, Pentiment, Grounded, and Hi-Fi Rush all got PlayStation ports, plus Xbox-owned Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has dropped on PS4 and PS5 as well. In the future, fans know that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming to PlayStation in 2025, as is Doom: The Dark Ages.
Rumor has it that Microsoft may be getting even more aggressive with its PlayStation ports. There have been persistent rumors that Starfield is jumping ship to PS5, and that even Halo could do the same. Time will tell if there is any truth to those rumors, but it seems like an Age of Empires 2 announcement could happen sooner rather than later, if this new discovery is any indication. Of course, such a move could open the door for other games in the franchise to follow suit, like this year’s Age of Mythology: Retold, for instance.
