The Unwritten Rules of Resident Evil Village Explained
Resident Evil Village provides a frightful experience. In it, Ethan Winters must face all sorts of supernatural horrors to save his daughter Rose. It’s not a title for the faint of heart, and it never struggles to deliver heart-stopping action.
To excel, players need nerves of steel and a good understanding of the game’s mechanics. There are also a few unwritten rules worth learning to make things easier. Most tips involve coming to grips with the guts of the combat system, while others even require players to take advantage of some of the features of Resident Evil Village‘s VR mode. With these unwritten rules, any player can master Lady Dimitrescu’s castle.

Use the Environment Wisely
Ethan seldom deals with one enemy at a time, meaning that players need to think about how to survive attacks coming from multiple directions. One of the ways to prevent him from getting overwhelmed is to slow down enemies, which players will be lucky to do from time to time by barricading the entrances of certain rooms with shelving units. This can buy players the time they need to reload a gun, tend to their wounds, and search the environment they’ve holed themselves up in before enemies eventually find a way in.
There won’t always be a room to hide in, but there are still ways to slow down incoming enemies. A good way to conserve ammo while protecting Ethan is to incapacitate enemies with sparse bags of flour that can temporarily incapacitate nearby enemies. On that note, it’s important to remember that not all enemies must be killed, and running away is a valid option that ensures Ethan Winters can live—as a molded figure no less—to fight another day with ammunition that might’ve been wasted otherwise.
VR Features Unlimited Throwing Knives
When all ammo is depleted, Ethan still has his trusty knife to use in a worst-case scenario. Interestingly, in Resident Evil Village VR, players can use Ethan’s knife as a projectile that comes in handy in a pinch. Best of all, as many knives can be thrown as desired. They don’t do much damage, yet they can stall an enemy long enough for Ethan to get his gun ready.
The Unwritten Rules of Exploration in Resident Evil Village
Animals Can be Hunted in Resident Evil Village
Resident Evil Village offers an expansive world for players to explore, and every corner holds new horrors. To make the most of the game, players should attempt to explore as much as possible. It is through exploration that vital items are found to progress the plot, and it also helps Ethan find useful items to help him against the Lycans. For example, players can go out of their way to find animals that can be harvested for ingredients to craft stat-boosting meals at the Duke’s merchant stands.
Seek Treasures and Lei
While exploring, it’s also worthwhile to seek all optional treasures. There are eight to find, and they’ll net players either a weapon or a treasure item that the Duke will happily purchase for a good amount of Lei. The treasures are marked on the map by the Duke, making the quest to hunt them down a tad easier and a fun supplementary objective players can pursue.
Lei is a useful currency that can be used to purchase items from the Duke, so it’s smart to collect as much as possible (including crystallized treasures players earn from labyrinth ball puzzles). To make the most of the treasures collected, players should ensure that combinable treasures have been combined. Doing so earns players a wealth of Lei when they sell the treasure to the Duke. The following combinable treasures can be composed in Resident Evil Village:
- Azure Eye Ring
- Wooden Goat
- Miss Madalina
- Dimitrescu’s Necklace
- Heisenberg’s Hammer
