Venom 3 Poised For Worst Opening Of Trilogy

Key Takeaways

  • Venom: The Last Dance has a rough box office start, with a projected $65 million opening weekend.
  • The film’s poor reviews and competition contribute to its struggles compared to the previous installment.
  • Overseas earnings might be the saving grace for the film, although the future looks uncertain domestically.

Now that Venom: The Last Dance is officially out in theaters, it’s time for Sony to see if the promise of its most popular series in its person Spiderverse coming to an end could lead to a big box office. With the movie just getting early returns, nothing is certain. But early indicators aren’t painting a rosy picture.

In fact, it turns out that if the preliminary numbers hold true, Sony is about to get some really bad news. Venom: The Last Dance is arguably the most hyped installment of the three Venom movies. Sony obviously brought back Tom Hardy, but it also inserted some other well-established, well-known stars, such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, and Rhys Ifans, to help get people excited for the final chapter. It doesn’t appear pulling out the stops didn’t do the trick.

According to Deadline, the Thursday preview box office turnout was expected to be around $8 million. Though the site did say there was a chance that a late night push domestically could bring in more money, that preview night number isn’t great. The full weekend projection is even worse as Venom: The Last Dance keeps getting hit with bad signs. Those projections show that the Tom Hardy’s swansong as the character could top out at a $65 million opening weekend stateside. Should that come to pass, it would mark easily the worst opening weekend for any movie in the trilogy.

Venom: The Last Dance‘s reviews just days before the film’s release are likely part of the reason things aren’t going well. Should that number be accurate it would also mean a dropoff of about $20 million from the opening weekend of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The first two movies in the trilogy did not exactly have massive opening weekends, but considering that October is not the most lucrative month of the year for superhero movies, the fact that Carnage and Venom were the third and fourth best for the month, shows just how much The Last Dance has fallen off.

When compared to other recent superhero movies, DC’s Black Adam and Joker: Folie a Deux both experienced similar struggles. The Rock starring vehicle brought in $7.6M in previews before making $26.6M on its opening Friday and $67M for the first weekend it was in theaters. The Joker sequel is the most recent demonstration of an absolute disaster in this genre. After a relatively OK $7M preview day, the box office absolutely fell apart for the rest of the weekend and only brought in $37 million for the entire opening weekend.

That poor opening for Joker: Folie a Deux has even forced Warner Bros. to bring the movie to home digital much faster than the regular timeframe as it will be purchasable or rentable in comic book movie lovers on October 29. It’s possible that a similar fate might be on the way for Venom: The Last Dance, should its domestic box offices be as bad as they are projected to be. One saving grace might be that overseas earnings have always been better for the first two movies in the trilogy than domestic numbers.
