Civilization 7 Pantheon Wish List
Civilization 7‘s religion system will likely see the return of pantheons, and past games have several that should fit nicely into the next game. Religion has been a major part of the Civilization games, playing an important role in many strategies. A big part of this utility comes from the Pantheons available to players. Ahead of Civilization 7‘s release, there are a few Pantheons from recent games that are well worth seeing again in the next installment.
Civilization 5 introduced Pantheons as a part of that game’s rework of the religion mechanic. Acting as a starting point for a civ’s religion, Pantheons in the Civilization series have an effect that will stick with the civ throughout the game, regardless of what other religion effects they eventually take. Some Pantheon effects are only minor bonuses, but with the right setup, they can give their users a significant boost once adopted. The range of Pantheon effects is impressive, and a few deserve a particular spotlight.

Civilization 7 Has Several Valid Pantheon Options From Past Games
Initiation Rites Turns Barbarian Attacks Into Free Faith
Initiation Rites grants a sizable 50 Faith to the user every time one of their units clears a Barbarian outpost, with Gathering Storm adding a full heal for the unit in question. This has the potential to give players a major advantage in Faith in the early game. If Barbarians in Civilization 7 remain a significant early-game annoyance, Initiation Rites can turn their appearances into an advantage. This Pantheon could greatly ease the path to founding a religion in Civilization 7 and reaching a potential power spike.
Since founding a Religion grants additional unique bonuses, it’s worth pushing Faith generation even after founding a Pantheon.
Divine Spark Can Earn an Early Great Person
Divine Spark is a Pantheon with a simple yet excellent power. With Divine Spark, the user’s yield of Great Person Points from Holy Sites, Campuses, and Theater Squares rises by 1. While seemingly small, this can help players gain Great Prophets, Writers, and Scientists early on. It’s a Pantheon that can help. This can make it a Pantheon that could help push the player towards multiple victories. Given the sheer value that Civilization places on Great People, Divine Spark could be invaluable.
Religious Settlements Lets Civilizations Grow Much Faster
Religious Settlements makes the user’s city borders grow 15% faster, but Civilization 6‘s Gathering Storm gave it a remarkable upgrade. With Gathering Storm, Religious Settlements also grants a free Settler upon adoption. Due to how Civilization 6 treated the founding of multiple cities, this was a huge advantage that let players grow very quickly. If Civilization 7 approaches its cities in a similar fashion, Religious Settlements could be very powerful, especially for players who seek to expand early.
Monument to the Gods is an Ancient Wonder Generator
Monument to the Gods is a powerful Pantheon, giving 15% bonus production when building Wonders from the Ancient or Classica era. Since Wonders in Civilization 6 were so powerful, building just one early on could be game-changing. With Civilization 7 changing its age system, Monument of the Gods would likely see a similar adjustment as well, most likely restricting it to the Ancient Era. However, even with that change, it would still be one of the best ways for players to generate an early Wonder.

River Goddess Makes Cities Happier in a Thematic Way
River Goddess and its predecessor Sacred Waters are similar Pantheons with nicely thematic abilities. River Goddess grants Amenities and Housing to a city with a Holy Site on a river, and Sacred Waters granted Happiness to cities on rivers. Either way, granting happiness to cities the player builds in Civilization as long as they’re on water make River Goddess and Sacred Waters some of the most fittingly-named Pantheons in the game. With the last two games making this Pantheon power something of a tradition, Civilization 7 might as well keep it up.
