India’s IFFI Sets Australia as Country of Focus
The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has tapped Australia as its Country of Focus for its upcoming 55th edition, set to run Nov. 20-28 in Goa. The selection comes on the heels of a recently ratified audiovisual coproduction treaty between the two nations.
The FIAPF-recognized festival will showcase seven Australian films, spotlighting work from both indigenous and contemporary filmmakers. Oscar-winning cinematographer John Seale (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The English Patient”) will deliver a masterclass as part of the Australian delegation.
Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest film market that runs concurrent to IFFI, will host representatives from Screen Australia, state screen commissions, and Ausfilm. The Australian government is funding up to six producers to attend and explore co-production opportunities.
The market will feature Australian project “Home Before Night” in its co-production market lineup. A dedicated Australian co-production day is planned to facilitate networking between filmmakers from both countries, along with a panel discussion focused on bilateral production opportunities.
The Australian presence extends to Film Bazaar’s Film Office exhibition area, where delegates will present Australian filming locations and production incentives. Under the new co-production treaty, qualifying projects will be eligible for grants from both countries.
“This special recognition also aims to celebrate the dynamic contributions of Australian cinema to the global film industry, highlighting its rich storytelling traditions, vibrant film culture and innovative cinematic techniques,” said a statement from India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The 55th and 56th editions of IFFI will be led by filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. Australian actor Cate Blanchett earned her first Oscar nomination for Kapur’s “Elizabeth.”
The highest profile Australian co-production shot in India is BAFTA-winner “Lion.” Several Indian films featuring top talent have shot in Australia, including “Indian” with Kamal Haasan, “Salaam Namaste,” starring Saif Ali Khan, “Dil Chahta Hai,” with Aamir Khan, “Chak De India,” featuring Shah Rukh Khan and “Heyy Babyy” and “Singh Is Kinng,” starring Akshay Kumar.
