RPGs are all about one thing: getting stronger. Modern RPGs have difficulty systems like the iconic Easy, Normal, and Hard choices. However, RPG fans also know that they can make a game easier simply by grinding through levels. When in doubt, grind. That is the internal motto of RPG fans and that can be true in Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Leveling up can certainly get players stronger but there are more ways to upgrade the party in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Some ways are obvious while other ways may not have occurred to players. So, let’s go through the blatant and hidden ways players can get powerful as fast as possible in the game.

6 Leveling Up And Diversifying Archetypes

A Robust Class System Is Waiting

Besides leveling up in the traditional way in an RPG, players can engage in the class system in Metaphor: ReFantazio called Archetypes. Players will unlock new ones as they recruit new party members and form new bonds with Followers which are like Social Link in the Persona series. Archetypes will level up alongside characters and all characters can equip all Archetypes.

Once conditions are met, some of the Archetypes can even evolve into better versions. For example, the Thief can transform into the Assassin. There’s a mechanic called Skill Inheritance in Metaphor: ReFantazio which allows characters to equip and use spells from other Archetypes too like a Healer could use fire magic from the Mage. Cross-classing and diversifying the party is a great way to get ahead of whatever comes at players.

5 Improving Stats Upon Leveling Up

You Don’t Have To Spend Them Right Away

When characters level up, they gain stat boosts, again, like in a traditional RPG. The hero character, canonically named Will, gets a bonus as players can use stat points to level up his stats as they please. Players can put ranks into the Strength, Magic, Endurance, Agility, and Luck stats in Metaphor: ReFantazio.

At such an early stage, it can be daunting with so many choices since Archetypes work better with certain stats. Magic obviously will benefit magic-type Archetypes like Mages and Healers while Strength will be great for male-focused Archetypes like Knights and Brawlers. What Archetypes should players focus their version of Will on? It will take some experimentation, so it’s best to save up stat points as they won’t waste away.

4 Improve Stats On The Gauntlet Runner

From Bathing Clothes To Bathing Your Body

Doing laundry in Metaphor ReFantazio

At first, the game looks like it has airships like other RPGs. However, there are also giant vehicles that can just run on the ground. Both versions are called Runners, and players will gain access to their land-based version, the Gauntlet Runner, within the first ten hours. Players can travel between cities and dungeons and this will take in-game days.

Players can choose to bond with their party members on the Gauntlet Runner as they travel or they can do other menial tasks. For example, they can improve stats in several ways permanently. Doing laundry will increase MP while cleaning the Gauntlet Runner will increase HP. Later, players can bathe to gain MAG, one of Metaphor: ReFantazio’s currencies, and when they take a bath they can add items to increase stats. For example, Hell’s Boiling Bath Bomb will increase Endurance by 2.

3 Improving Your Royal Virtues

It’s The Stats Of Life

Players are going to need to raise their Royal Virtues if they want to engage with Followers. Players can upgrade Courage, Wisdom, Tolerance, Eloquence, and Imagination by doing a variety of things from completing side quests to talking to NPCs around town to gauge how the world is doing politically. For example, there is a bench in Grand Trad that players can sit on to gain Wisdom and there are books to read on the Gauntlet Runner that can improve a variety of Royal Virtues.

One early example of a Royal Virtue requirement for a Follower can be found with Brigitta. Players must have their Wisdom at level two which will open up a side quest. Completing it will give players a bunch of rewards besides gaining Brigitta’s friendship including access to the accessory shop that she runs in Metaphor: ReFantazio.

2 Hang Out With Your Followers

Bigger Bonds Form Bigger Rewards

Let’s dive into the Follower system with some more depth in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Party members and NPCs can become Followers. When players can see them depends on the time of day, how high their Royal Virtue is, and where they are in the story. For example, two early party members, Strohl and Hulkenberg, need to have their Follower episodes continue on the Gauntlet Runner.

You won’t get very far without these key spells.

Even though there are restrictions, it’s more flexible than any of the Social Links equivalents in the Persona games. Also, the upgrades are much more significant. Increasing the bond with a Follower can unlock new classes, how many spells they can equip from other classes, and give players new mechanics to toy with like the ability to switch Archetypes on the go instead of through Akademeia.

1 Getting The Best Gear And Purifying It

Leave No Chest Unturned

Upgrading the Dragon’s Indignation in Metaphor ReFantazio

One of the most interesting mechanics in Metaphor: ReFantazio is called purification. There is a little church in Grand Trad that can upgrade equipment to reach new heights. For example, in the Nords Mines, players can fight the Fire Dragon Mauna, and behind this mini-boss is the Dragon’s Indignation Greatsword, which Strohl can equip to his Warrior Archetype. Back in Grand Trad, this weapon can become stronger via the Dragon’s Judgment Greatsword.

Equipment that can be upgraded will be marked in blue and the text will also mention the purification process. There are also pink and yellow weapons, which highlight rarity similar to the Diablo series. Even though there may be normal white weapons worth finding or purchasing, colored weapons are the ones that will improve the lives of characters more. A set of heroes is only as strong as their equipment.
