Key Takeaways

  • Destiny: Rising is a new mobile RPG shooter by NetEase set in an alternate Destiny timeline.
  • The game features unique characters and abilities, and offers alpha testing starting November 1.
  • Gameplay is reminiscent of Destiny 2, but fans should expect typical mobile game monetization practices.

A new experience in the world of Destiny has officially been unveiled in the form of a mobile game titled Destiny: Rising, an RPG shooter developed by NetEase which appears to take place in an alternate timeline within the Destiny universe. Fans have been aware of a rumored mobile Destiny game for months now, and while the reveal trailer does finally give fans a look at what to expect in terms of gameplay, there remains a plethora of questions surrounding the mobile-exclusive title.

With Destiny: Rising allegedly being developed almost entirely by NetEase Games, the studio behind titles such as Once Human and Diablo Immortal, players shouldn’t have to worry about Bungie stretching itself thin across too many projects. The Destiny 2 developer has recently shared a ton of new information pertaining to the content it plans to release for its flagship game throughout 2025, including a full roadmap for Codename: Frontiers which details how next year’s content will be divided up and roughly when fans should expect to see it. The studio also seems to be hard at work on Marathon, which appears to remain in development despite the considerable number of layoffs and general chaos at Bungie in recent times.

Still, the reveal trailer for Destiny: Rising reveals gameplay which, on the surface, appears remarkably similar to that of the main game. The game seems to take place in a bygone age before the existence of Guardians as they’re known today, suggesting that the game itself occurs during the Warlord era of the Destiny universe, although a description of the game from its official Twitter account describes it as taking place “in an alternate Destiny timeline.” While there appears to be a lot for fans to dig into, the game isn’t available to jump into right away. Players will need to visit the game’s official website and register to participate in the game’s first closed alpha test which starts on November 1.

Alpha aside, no official release date for the game has yet been shared. Previous rumors indicate that Bungie’s involvement with the game’s development is largely tied to that of the game’s narrative and lore. The pre-alpha gameplay shown in the trailer shows a mix of first-person and third-person combat, and features a variety of familiar locations and enemies throughout the Sol System. The game seems to be largely hero-based, featuring a selection of unique characters and a plethora of new abilities not seen in Destiny 2.

Quite a few of the rumors attached to Destiny: Rising seem to have been all but confirmed by the content shown in the game’s first trailer. But while the art style and gameplay of Destiny: Rising appears strongly reminiscent of the main game, fans should expect it to involve the same kind of monetization practices involved with mobile games in general.
